Temporary Aerial Sensor Operator information

What is a temporary aerial sensor operator?

Temporary Aerial Sensor Operators are professionals who operate specialized sensors and equipment aboard aircraft for a set period, often during specific projects or seasons. They are responsible for collecting aerial data such as images, videos, or measurements for purposes like mapping, research, surveillance, or environmental monitoring. These operators ensure the equipment functions correctly and that data is accurately recorded and reported. The role typically requires technical expertise with sensor technology, attention to detail, and the ability to work in dynamic aerial environments. Temporary positions may be project-based or seasonal, depending on the employer's needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temporary aerial sensor operator?

To thrive as a Temporary Aerial Sensor Operator, you generally need knowledge of aerial data collection, experience in operating imaging sensors, and a background in aviation or remote sensing. Familiarity with GPS systems, GIS software, mapping tools, and sometimes FAA Part 107 certification for drone operations are typically required. Attention to detail, situational awareness, and strong communication skills help operators ensure data accuracy and manage coordination with flight or ground teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial for gathering precise aerial data safely and efficiently in time-sensitive environments.

What are some common challenges faced by temporary aerial sensor operators during field assignments?

Temporary Aerial Sensor Operators often encounter challenges such as rapidly changing weather conditions, irregular work hours, and operating sensitive equipment in remote locations. Adapting quickly to new flight crews and learning the specifics of different aircraft or sensor systems is essential. Strong communication skills are crucial, as operators must coordinate closely with pilots and ground teams to ensure data accuracy and mission success. Flexibility and attention to detail help overcome these challenges and contribute to a safe and productive work environment.

What is the difference between Temporary Aerial Sensor Operator vs Drone Pilot?

Job description

Anduril Industries is a defense technology company with a mission to transform U.S. and allied military capabilities with advanced technology. By bringing the expertise, technology, and business model of the 21st century's most innovative companies to the defense industry, Anduril is changing how military systems are designed, built and sold. Anduril's family of systems is powered by Lattice OS, an AI-powered operating system that turns thousands of data streams into a realtime, 3D command and control center. As the world enters an era of strategic competition, Anduril is committed to bringing cutting-edge autonomy, AI, computer vision, sensor fusion, and networking technology to the military in months, not years.
ABOUT THE TEAM
The Launched Effects team at Anduril is responsible for scaling the manufacturing and delivery of the Altius family of systems (including the Altius-600 and Altius-700). As the premier Air-Launched Effects platform for the U.S. military and its allies, Altius is redefining modern warfare. These tube-launched, autonomous aerial systems must be built to survive extreme deployment environments, requiring precision manufacturing of advanced composites, complex avionics, and modular payload integrations for ISR, Electronic Warfare, and kinetic strike capabilities.
We are a fast-moving, mission-driven group of manufacturing engineers, quality specialists, and production operations experts who refuse to accept traditional, slow defense manufacturing timelines. We continuously optimize our assembly lines, implement automated testing, design for manufacturing (DFM), and build resilient supply chains to deploy reliable systems to the front lines at unprecedented speed. If you want to work on a team where your production and manufacturing decisions directly impact global security, this is it.
ABOUT THE JOB
We are looking for a Manufacturing Specialist, Drone Program to join our rapidly growing team in Ashville, OH. In this role, you will be responsible for the assembly, repair, and testing of advanced drone systems while supporting new product introductions and process improvements. You will work closely with manufacturing and support engineers, draft and update technical documentation, and build fixtures to ensure the highest quality and reliability of our drone hardware. This will require expertise in mechanical troubleshooting, precision machining, blueprint reading, and hands-on maintenance and repair. If you are someone who thrives in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, with strong communication skills and a passion for continuous improvement, then this role is for you.
This position is permanently based in Ashville, OH, and requires candidates to temporarily relocate for a comprehensive 3-month training program: 1 month in Santa Ana, CA, followed by 2 months (approximately) in Atlanta, GA. To support your transition, Anduril will fully provide and cover all corporate housing, transportation, and travel accommodations during this training period. Your recruiter will discuss the logistics of this program with you in detail during the hiring process
WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Collaborate with manufacturing and support engineers on production processes and new product introductions
  • Execute repair and maintenance tasks for drones and assemble fixtures according to quality standards
  • Conduct rigorous testing and qualification validations while driving process improvements
  • Draft, write, and update procedures for drone manufacturing and repair
  • Design and build tooling and fixtures to support new testing requirements
  • Travel up to 20% for offsite test support and project requirements
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Proven experience in high volume manufacturing and assembly within aerospace, military, or other high-reliability industries.
  • Strong mechanical troubleshooting and repair skills, with experience in maintaining and upgrading production processes.
  • Excellent blueprint reading, technical documentation, and test procedure development skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment while maintaining meticulous attention to detail.
  • Must be a U.S. Person due to required access to U.S. export controlled information or facilities
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Prior experience with drone systems or related unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
  • Demonstrated capability to train new hires or lead small teams in a manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing methodologies (5S, TPM) and process improvement strategies.
