University Bus Drivers operate activity buses ranging in size from 22 passengers to 44 passengers. A North Carolina State University Bus Driver is responsible for safely transporting students, faculty, staff, and school affiliates to and from designated locations. These locations may be within the same city or different cities. Trips may be field trips or labs to extend the academic experience, sporting events, or other extracurricular activities. Since the University Bus Driver accommodates student/faculty schedules, they generally work unusual hours. He/she may work early morning, late evening, or weekends. The Bus Driver maintains the cleanliness, organization, and safety of the bus itself.
This role is expected to last 11 months with the potential to extend

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Picks up and returns passengers at locations specified by reservation
Ensures that all passengers are safely and properly seated on the bus
Observes rules of the road and drives with caution
Ensures timely conveyance of passengers to their destination
Ensures that vehicles are kept neat and clean at all times
Carries out routine pre-trip and post-trip inspection of vehicles in the hour prior to the shuttle pick up; inspects tire pressure, oil levels, windshield wipers, mirrors and other details for any problems. Identify electrical or mechanical faults. May carry out simple maintenance on vehicles. Brings problems or maintenance needs to the attention of the Bus Dispatcher.
Fills bus fuel tank
Read maps and check weather and traffic reports to determine the best route to take
Keep all documents and receipts of the vehicle and maintenance services secure
Maintain a travel log to record travel locations travelled to, travel time, work hours and mileage for billing purposes.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • A bus driver must be well-trained. He/she should be a skilled driver and must hold a CDL A/B operating license with passenger endorsement
  • He/ she must have specific knowledge of traffic laws and rules of the road. Must adhere strictly to them
  • The work of bus driving may involve loading and unloading of luggage, and frequent opening of doors requiring strength and stamina.
  • The Bus Driver must be patient and calm in dealing with situations like irate passengers and traffic congestion. Must be capable of acting quickly and calmly in a crisis.
  • Must be able to drive for a long period of time and possess a strong sense of direction,
  • He/she must be a person who values lives and must think about the safety of his/her passengers and other road users.
  • He/she must be focused, confident, and observant while driving. Must demonstrate a quick response time.
  • Possess effective communication, leadership and team play skills, as well as the ability to adhere to instructions.
