What is temp teaching?

Temp teaching jobs, also known as temporary or substitute teaching positions, are short-term teaching roles that fill in for regular teachers who are absent due to illness, leave, or other reasons. These positions can range from a single day to several months, depending on the school's needs. Temp teachers are responsible for maintaining classroom management, delivering lesson plans, and supporting students' learning during the regular teacher's absence. This role is a great way to gain teaching experience and flexibility for those interested in education.

What are some common challenges faced by temp teachers and how can they effectively integrate into new classrooms?

Temp teachers often encounter challenges such as adapting quickly to different school cultures, managing unfamiliar classrooms, and building rapport with students in a short period of time. To integrate effectively, it's helpful to review lesson plans in advance, communicate proactively with permanent staff, and establish clear expectations with students from the start. Flexibility, strong classroom management skills, and a willingness to ask for support when needed are key to succeeding in temporary teaching roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temp teaching professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temp Teaching professional, you need solid subject matter expertise, classroom management abilities, and at least a relevant teaching credential or degree. Familiarity with digital learning platforms, attendance systems, and interactive classroom tools is often required. Adaptability, strong communication, and the ability to quickly build rapport with students and staff make someone stand out in this role. These skills ensure effective instruction, smooth transitions, and a positive learning environment, even when stepping into unfamiliar classrooms at short notice.

Associate Teacher at Bullis Charter School Share on X Print Application Deadline 9/15/2026 11:55 PM Pacific Date Posted 8/18/2026 Contact Rodrigo Soto Number of Openings 1 Salary Single Rate $77,108 Annually Add'l Salary Info Commensurate with experience Length of Work Year 2026-2027 School Calendar Employment Type Full Time Job Summary Job Summary In a multi-faceted instructional role, Associate Teachers balance collaborative instructional support with independent classroom leadership. This position is designed for educators to provide high-impact assistance to grade-level teams while maintaining the readiness to scale their impact as lead instructors. Under the mentorship of lead teachers, Associate Teachers refine their pedagogical skills by leading data-driven small-group interventions, co-planning inclusive curricula, facilitating formative assessments to drive student growth, and designing and delivering co-curriculars.

At the direction of the School Principal, Associate Teachers pivot from a support capacity to the primary internal successor for statutory leaves (such as medical, military, or administrative leave), allowing for a strategic response to meet the school's staffing needs. Because Associate Teachers are deeply embedded in the school's curriculum and culture, they are uniquely positioned to step in as the Temporary Teacher of Record for the duration of extended assignments. During extended assignments (30 days or more), Associate Teachers assume full ownership of the classroom overseeing lesson implementation, grading, and parent communication, to ensure instructional continuity and academic rigor remain uninterrupted.

Ultimately, this role provides excellent hands-on classroom experience, establishing a direct pipeline to a full lead Teacher position within one to two years. Requirements / Qualifications Please visit the Bullis job board. Requirements / Qualifications Please visit the Bullis job board.
