Job description

Description
The School of Aquatic and Fishery Science in collaboration with Dr Samuel Gurr at Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC, Oregon State University) invites applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Scholar (PDS) to lead bioinformatics analysis of a multi -omics dataset on wild sea scallop populations from the Mid-Atlantic Bight to the northern Gulf of Maine. Specifically, the successful candidate will leverage our chromosome-level genome assembly to determine population structure and the regulatory control of chromatin accessibility on transcription to a warming x acidification challenge. Results of this analysis will determine the molecular machinery underpinning adaptive responses to current and impending challenges relevant to the sea scallop fishery. The project spans population genomics, chromatin remodeling, transcriptomics and cytology and will benefit a range of stakeholders leading annual sea scallop surveys and wild fisheries management in the US Atlantic (e.g. NOAA, Maine Department of Marine Resources, Commercial Fisheries Research Foundation, Virginia Institute of Marine Science).
The PDS will be physically located within the Gurr Lab at HMSC in Newport OR, a vibrant new lab (gurr-lab.com) consisting of postdoctoral research scientists, two graduate students, and a varying number of undergraduates. Depending on interest, there may be opportunities to become involved in other projects or to mentor graduate and undergraduate students. The PDS will be expected to present results at conferences and in meetings with stakeholders, provide written and oral reports to project partners, and to publish the scallop genome alongside results from our multi -omics dataset in peer-reviewed literature.
This is a full time, 12-month (1-year) position with possibility of reappointment for a second year, dependent on performance and funding. University of Washington Postdoctoral Scholar appointments are for a temporary, defined period not to exceed five years/60 months, including any previous postdoctoral experience. Applicants who have met all doctoral degree requirements but have not yet had their degrees conferred may apply. Such candidates will be appointed as a Postdoctoral Scholar Conditional for a maximum of 12 months. Once a degree is conferred the position converts to a Postdoctoral Scholar title for the remainder the appointment term.
At this time we are not able to accept candidates who would require visa sponsorship.
Postdoctoral scholars are engaged in full-time, mentored advanced training to enhance professional skills and research independence. Given the close mentoring relationship necessitated by the nature of postdoctoral scholar appointments; access to the full university community to support individual development; and, if applicable, visa sponsorship requirements, postdoctoral scholars must be physically present at their place of work on Hatfield Marine Science Center at Oregon State University to property to fulfill their appointment duties.

Salary: The base salary range for this position will be $5,705 - $8,000 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
• PhD or foreign equivalent in Biology, Molecular Genetics, Fisheries Science, Statistics or related disciplines
• Experience in basic laboratory techniques
• Thorough knowledge of population genetics/genomics, transcriptomics, and epigenetics
• Experience with the analysis of large-scale NGS data (bioinformatics)
• Demonstrated ability to summarize scientific findings in the form of written manuscripts and oral presentations
Desired Qualifications:
• Interest in collaborating with diverse groups, including mariculture industry organizations, USDA, and University scientists
• Proficiency in statistics and data analysis
• Experience with the application of genomics in fisheries management and/or natural resource management
• Knowledge/interest in genetic adaptation and epigenetic modulation of transcription
