What is a temp lawyer?

A temp lawyer, also known as a temporary or contract lawyer, is a legal professional hired for a specific period or project rather than as a permanent staff member. Temp lawyers often handle tasks such as document review, research, or assisting during high workload periods. Law firms and legal departments use temp lawyers to manage increased caseloads, cover employee absences, or provide specialized expertise. This role offers flexibility for both employers and lawyers, making it a common option in the legal industry.

What types of assignments are typically given to temp lawyers, and how do these projects contribute to their professional development?

Temp lawyers are often assigned to handle document review, legal research, contract drafting, due diligence, and supporting litigation teams during peak workloads or special projects. These assignments offer exposure to various areas of law and the inner workings of different legal teams, which can broaden a temp lawyer’s expertise and build a diverse skill set. Regular collaboration with senior attorneys and exposure to a range of clients also provide valuable networking opportunities and insights into potential areas for future specialization or permanent roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temp lawyer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temp Lawyer, you need a law degree, active bar admission, and solid legal research, writing, and analytical skills. Familiarity with legal research databases (like Westlaw or LexisNexis), e-discovery platforms, and document management systems is often required. Excellent time management, adaptability, and strong communication skills help temp lawyers quickly integrate into new teams and handle diverse legal tasks. These skills ensure high-quality legal work, efficient project completion, and seamless collaboration in fast-paced or transitional environments.

Company Overview
Price Benowitz LLP is a mid-sized law firm headquartered in Washington, DC, with offices throughout Washington, DC, Maryland, Virginia, and South Carolina. Our practice areas include Family Law, Criminal Defense, Personal Injury, Medical Malpractice, Trusts & Estates, and more.  Guided by our core values of Passion, Integrity, and Excellence, we are committed to delivering exceptional legal services while fostering a collaborative and supportive workplace.
Position Summary
Price Benowitz LLP is seeking an experienced Managing Family Law Paralegal to provide dedicated support to one Family Law attorney while also managing and providing leadership to the Family Law staff team.
This is a fully remote, hands-on leadership position for an accomplished family law professional who can serve as the attorney’s right hand while providing day-to-day guidance, coordination, and oversight to the Family Law support staff.
We are looking for someone with strong, extensive family law experience, excellent judgment, and the ability to take ownership of both substantive casework and team operations. A strong and stable work history and prior management or leadership experience are highly desirable.
Candidates may be located anywhere in the United States but must be available to travel to Washington, DC approximately once per quarter for in-person meetings, training, and team collaboration.
Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive, dedicated paralegal support to one Family Law attorney throughout all phases of family law matters.
  • Manage and coordinate the Family Law staff team, establishing priorities, delegating work, monitoring assignments, and ensuring deadlines and service expectations are met.
  • Serve as a resource and leader to Family Law staff, providing guidance, mentoring, support, and accountability while promoting effective collaboration across the team.
  • Support matters involving divorce, custody, child support, spousal support, equitable distribution, contempt actions, domestic violence matters, and post-judgment proceedings.
  • Draft, review, and finalize pleadings, motions, discovery requests and responses, subpoenas, financial affidavits, settlement agreements, correspondence, and other legal documents.
  • Prepare and electronically file pleadings and ensure compliance with applicable court rules, procedures, and deadlines.
  • Manage attorney calendars, court dates, discovery deadlines, mediation schedules, and case timelines.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for clients, providing compassionate, professional communication and regular case updates.
  • Review, organize, and summarize financial records, tax returns, bank statements, business records, and other documents relevant to family law matters.
  • Coordinate discovery, document production, subpoenas, depositions, and expert witnesses.
  • Prepare hearing notebooks, trial binders, exhibits, witness files, and mediation materials.
  • Maintain organized electronic case files and ensure accurate and timely documentation.
  • Monitor case progress, proactively identify outstanding tasks, and ensure matters continue moving efficiently.
  • Work collaboratively with attorneys, opposing counsel, court personnel, mediators, experts, clients, and internal staff.
  • Accurately record billable time and assist with case management and administrative responsibilities as needed.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 3 years of substantive family law paralegal experience, preferably in a litigation-focused practice; significantly more experience is strongly preferred for this leadership role (No Contract or temporary work experience).
  • Extensive hands-on experience handling family law matters from inception through resolution.
  • Prior experience leading, managing, mentoring, supervising, or coordinating paralegals or legal support staff is highly desirable.
  • Strong and stable employment history highly preferred, demonstrating increasing responsibility, reliability, and professional growth.
  • Exceptional drafting, proofreading, organizational, and case management skills.
  • Strong knowledge of discovery procedures, court filings, and litigation support.
  • Ability to manage multiple active cases and competing priorities while simultaneously overseeing and supporting the work of others.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • High degree of professionalism, discretion, accountability, and client service.
  • Ability to work independently and remain highly productive and responsive in a fully remote environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and legal case management software.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to Washington, DC approximately once per quarter.
What We’re Looking For
We are looking for a seasoned Family Law Paralegal who can successfully balance two critical responsibilities: serving as the dedicated right hand to one Family Law attorney and providing effective leadership to the Family Law staff team.
The ideal candidate has substantial family law experience and does not simply wait for assignments. They anticipate what needs to be done, identify potential issues before they become problems, take initiative, exercise sound judgment, and follow through independently.
As a manager, they are approachable and collaborative while also comfortable setting expectations, delegating responsibilities, monitoring performance, providing feedback, and holding team members accountable.
Because this is a fully remote leadership role, we are particularly interested in candidates who have demonstrated stability, maturity, self-direction, and accountability throughout their careers.
This position is particularly well suited for an experienced family law professional who enjoys substantive casework but is also ready to take ownership of a team and help drive the effectiveness and organization of a growing Family Law practice.
Schedule & Location
  • Full-time, fully remote position
  • Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–6:00 PM Eastern Time
  • Candidates may be located anywhere within the United States.
  • Quarterly travel to Washington, DC is required.
  • We are seeking someone who can begin as soon as possible.
Additional Information
At Price Benowitz LLP, we offer a comprehensive healthcare benefits package in compliance with applicable requirements. Our benefits include employer-supported medical, dental, and vision insurance, mental health support, and disability and life insurance for income protection.
