THE POSITION
Douglas County Museum - Umpqua Lighthouse
Winchester Bay, OR
Seasonal On-Call Position. Non-benefited, No Guarantee of Hours.
Job Summary:
This position provides support for the Douglas County Lighthouse Museum operations and gift shop setting by performing a variety of customer service and clerical duties. The position provides a positive visitor experience, processes customer transactions, takes and fills orders, and maintains cleanliness and appearance of the assigned area. Position may assist with special events, programs and/or activities related to the museum and gift shop areas.
Essential Functions:
This is not an exhaustive or all-inclusive list of responsibilities, skills, duties or functions associated with the job.
  • Greet visitors, providing information about the museum and gift shop offerings
  • Assist with merchandise inquiries, take and/or fill coffee-bar beverage orders, and processes customer transactions
  • Work behind and in front of a counter with small work space
  • Perform sales of merchandise; process payments using point-of-sale system(s) in accordance with County policy; count money and make change
  • Assist with the arrangement and display of merchandise and pricing
  • Maintain cleanliness and appearance of gift shop and surrounding areas
  • Answer phones, relay messages, maintain records, retrieve products and supplies, stock merchandise, prepare and/or fill orders

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:

Any equivalent combination of education and experience, which demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities required, will be considered. however, the following is preferred:
  • High school graduation or equivalency supplemented with experience in customer service and working in an office setting
Desirable qualifications:
  • Experience working in a retail setting and processing cash/credit/debit sales.
Required:
  • Oregon Food Handler Card is required at time of employment.
Knowledge of - general knowledge and understanding of museum collections, exhibits, and/or retail practices and procedures; basic math including US currency and making change, keyboarding, taking/filling orders, and managing a variety of merchandising tasks; Skill in communicating and working effectively with a variety of individuals; maintaining a professional demeanor; following directions. Ability to learn and operate point of sale equipment as well as hand-held or other equipment; work within a small area, accurately count money and make change; manage various tasks within the gift shop or coffee-bar areas, adapt to changing schedules and tasks; file and arrange records, answer phone calls and relay messages; lift, move, and package items; maintain a tidy and well-stocked workspace; and courteously meet and deal effectively with the general public and other employees.
SCREENING & EVALUATION
Work is performed in a retail environment. Work is generally sedentary; however, requires bending, speaking, hearing voice conversation, keyboarding, kneeling, working with hand-held devices, lifting materials up to 30 pounds, pulling, pushing, reaching, standing or sitting for long periods of time, viewing computer monitor screens, and walking up and downstairs.
Background Investigation: While not part of initial applicant screening, the finalist for this position may be required to pass a criminal history backgroundcheck as part of a contingent offer of employment. Conviction of a crime may not necessarily disqualify an individual from employment.

This position works on-call, as needed with no General County benefits. Position not eligible for vacation accrual, **sick leave accrual, holidays or any other General County benefit afforded to a position budgeted to work 20 hours or more per week.
Part-time employees budgeted less than .50, and temporary employees, shall be front loaded up to a maximum of 40 hours of annual sick leave, that may be used for qualifying reasons as set forth in Oregon's Sick Leave Law as amended from time to time. Front loaded sick leave may be pro-rated in the manner described in this rule (). Sick leave hours do not accrue or carry forward from one year to the next. For the purpose of this provision of the sick leave rule, a "year" is the Fiscal Year from July 1 to June 30. Once the Fiscal Year has started, newly hired part-time/on-call/temporary employees shall not be eligible to use sick leave until their 91st day of employment, unless otherwise required by law.
