Temp Cnc Router Operator information

Will CNC operators be replaced by AI?

CNC router operators perform tasks that involve setting up and monitoring computer-controlled machines, and while automation and AI can handle some repetitive functions, human oversight is still essential for complex adjustments, troubleshooting, and quality control. Advances in technology may change the role, but complete replacement by AI is unlikely in the near term due to the need for skilled judgment and manual intervention.

Can a CNC machinist make 100k a year?

A CNC router operator typically earns less than $100,000 annually, with average salaries ranging from $40,000 to $70,000 depending on experience, location, and industry. Reaching a $100,000 salary usually requires advanced skills, certifications, or supervisory roles in machining or manufacturing environments.

Can I make money with a CNC router?

A CNC router operator can earn income by producing custom parts, signage, or furniture for clients or businesses. Income depends on skill level, workload, and market demand, with opportunities for freelance or full-time employment in manufacturing or fabrication environments.

What is the hourly rate for a CNC machine operator?

The hourly rate for a CNC router operator typically ranges from $15 to $25, depending on experience, location, and the complexity of the work. Entry-level operators may earn closer to the lower end, while skilled operators with certifications can earn higher wages. Wages may also increase with overtime and additional responsibilities.

Job description

Job Title: 1st Shift CNC Mill Machinist

Job Description

This role offers an opportunity for an experienced CNC Mill Machinist to perform full machine setups in a small, close‑knit job shop environment. You will work on Fanuc-controlled CNC mills, execute multiple setups and change-overs per day, and produce precision components to tight tolerances while interpreting complex blueprints and G/M code.

Responsibilities

  • Perform full setups on CNC mills, including configuring workholding, tooling, and programs for each job.
  • Set offsets, make necessary adjustments, and change out tooling to ensure efficient and accurate machining.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications to determine machining operations and requirements.
  • Read and understand G and M code to verify and adjust machine programs as needed.
  • Operate Fanuc-controlled CNC mills to produce parts within tight tolerances, holding dimensions to approximately half-thousandth accuracy.
  • Use precision measurement tools such as calipers and micrometers to inspect parts and verify dimensional accuracy.
  • Perform multiple setups and change-overs per day in a job shop environment, adapting quickly to varying part numbers and requirements.
  • Occasionally operate multiple CNC mills simultaneously while maintaining quality and efficiency.
  • Utilize an overhead crane or hoist occasionally to safely move parts and materials.
  • Monitor machine performance, identify issues, and make adjustments to maintain consistent quality and throughput.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area and follow established shop procedures.
  • Collaborate with team members and owners on the shop floor to resolve issues and continuously improve processes.

Essential Skills

  • 3–5+ years of job shop machining experience, including frequent multiple setups and change-overs per day.
  • 5+ years of CNC mill experience, with strong preference for experience on Fanuc-controlled machines.
  • Proven ability to perform full setups, change out tooling, and make adjustments independently, often 2–5 setups or change-overs per day.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and work instructions accurately.
  • Strong understanding of G and M code for CNC milling operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to hold tight tolerances to approximately half-thousandth (+/- 0.0005) consistently.
  • Proficiency using precision measurement tools such as micrometers and calipers.
  • Experience working in a job shop environment, handling varied work and frequent part change-overs.
  • Solid CNC machining fundamentals, including knowledge of feeds, speeds, tooling, and material behavior.
  • Professional attitude, reliability, and the ability to work effectively in a small, collaborative shop setting.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Ability to program CNC G-code directly from a print or model.
  • Experience programming with Mastercam or Fusion for CNC milling operations.
  • Ownership of personal precision measurement tools (micrometers, calipers), demonstrating commitment to the trade.
  • Experience operating overhead cranes or hoists to move parts and materials safely.
  • Familiarity with both job shop and low-volume, high-mix production environments.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work well with a small, tight-knit team.
  • Attention to detail and a focus on quality, continuous improvement, and safe work practices.

Why Work Here?

You will join a small, family-style shop where everyone knows each other and the owners are present on the floor every day, creating a supportive and approachable atmosphere. The environment offers the feel of a traditional mom-and-pop operation with modern CNC capabilities, giving you a chance to see the direct impact of your work and craftsmanship.
