Temp Air Dispersion Modeling information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Temp Air Dispersion Modeler, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temp Air Dispersion Modeler, you typically need a background in environmental science, meteorology, or engineering, with experience in atmospheric modeling and data analysis. Proficiency in specialized modeling software such as AERMOD, CALPUFF, or ISC, as well as familiarity with GIS tools, is often required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help in interpreting data and presenting complex findings to stakeholders. These skills and qualifications are crucial for producing accurate air quality assessments that inform regulatory compliance and public health decisions.

What are some common challenges faced by Temp Air Dispersion Modeling professionals during short-term assignments?

Temp Air Dispersion Modeling professionals often encounter challenges such as quickly familiarizing themselves with local regulatory requirements and site-specific data in a limited timeframe. They may need to adapt to different modeling software or methodologies used by the host organization and ensure timely, accurate results for project deadlines. Collaboration with environmental engineers, project managers, and regulatory agencies is essential, and effective communication is key to integrating into new teams and achieving project objectives during a short-term contract.

What is a Temp Air Dispersion Modeler?

A Temp Air Dispersion Modeler is a professional who uses specialized software and scientific methods to predict how airborne pollutants disperse in the atmosphere, often focusing on temporary or short-term projects. These models help assess the impact of emissions from industrial facilities, construction sites, or other sources on local air quality. Temp Air Dispersion Modelers typically work on a contract basis and may be responsible for collecting data, running simulations, and preparing reports for regulatory compliance or environmental assessments.

What is the difference between Temp Air Dispersion Modeling vs Air Quality Technician?

AspectTemp Air Dispersion ModelingAir Quality Technician
CredentialsEnvironmental or engineering degrees, certifications in dispersion modelingEnvironmental science or technician certifications, EPA training
Work EnvironmentComputer-based analysis, field data collection, modeling softwareField sampling, equipment maintenance, data recording
Industry UsageEnvironmental consulting, regulatory compliance, modeling projectsMonitoring stations, environmental agencies, site assessments

Temp Air Dispersion Modeling focuses on creating computer models to predict air pollutant dispersion, often requiring specialized software and analytical skills. In contrast, Air Quality Technicians perform field sampling and data collection to monitor air quality directly. Both roles are essential in environmental management but differ in their methods and tools.

Job description

Join a diverse, dynamic, and enthusiastic team of environmental engineering professionals who play a leading role in air quality permitting and compliance at Amazon Web Services (AWS), where we have a history of leading the world in innovative technologies and services. As a member of the Air Quality Team, you will develop and implement environmental programs aimed at ensuring compliance with air quality regulations and standards in the Americas while also enabling AWS's growth around the world.
As an Air Quality Modeler, you will play a key role in air permitting and air quality compliance for new and existing AWS facilities in the Americas (AMER) region. You will be the environmental representative on behalf of the AWS Environmental Team in AMER responsible for the successful delivery of air dispersion modeling projects

You will partner with stakeholders across AWS to develop standards and mechanisms that incorporate air dispersion modeling into the process of planning, building, and operating data centers. You will manage strategic air dispersion modeling and air permitting projects and provide regulatory compliance guidance for both design and operations teams. The Air Quality Modeler will also work with internal and external partners that include government entities, AWS regional environmental engineers, consultants, design, construction, operations and other key stakeholders.

You will regularly engage with stakeholders; report to AWS Environmental leaders; and ensure risks to air permitting and compliance pathways are being appropriately identified, communicated, and managed.
The successful candidate will have a strong track record of air dispersion modeling in support of air permitting in North America, the demonstrated ability to deliver multiple high priority projects simultaneously, the ability to drive alignment across teams with competing priorities, and be a strong advocate for air quality compliance and sustainability.
Key job responsibilities
Function as a leader for air dispersion modeling work in AMER by completing air dispersion modeling analyses in support of air permitting and strategic data center planning and design
Develop air dispersion modeling tools and mechanisms which provide efficient technical oversight to environmental and partner teams
Collaborate with relevant business units such as environmental infrastructure development, design engineering, due diligence, real estate, construction, and operations beginning early in the capacity planning and site selection process and throughout the design phase of facilities to ensure future compliance with environmental regulations and air dispersion modeling thresholds
Manage contracts, budgets, and relationships with environmental consultants and vendors to complete air permit applications, air dispersion modeling analyses and perform air emissions testing
Prepare air permit applications in AMER by managing the preparation of air permit applications for new construction, modifications, amendments, and renewals
Function as a leader regarding regulatory agency interactions for permit evaluation and processing, new process and technology introduction, and technical application of air dispersion modeling protocols
Build effective relationships with regulatory bodies, laboratories, and service providers for air permitting program
Consult on strategies to reduce environmental impact of air emissions
Prioritize and manage multiple technically complex assignments concurrently
Represent Amazon at appropriate levels with governmental agencies and throughout the company
A day in the life
This role's primary focus is to function as an environmental air quality leader and provide critical air dispersion modeling analyses and strategies that support AWS growth and compliance in the Americas. You will work directly with partner teams throughout the data center development lifecycle to encourage sustainable air quality development and design and to ensure compliance with local, state and federal air regulations. Beyond the day-to-day responsibilities, you will monitor and review evolving and emerging air quality permitting/modeling regulations; you may be required to assess impact(s) of regulatory changes to AWS and propose course of action.
The AWS Environmental team is a dynamic team that is critical to enabling AWS's growth around the world, as well as ensuring compliance of AWS's global operations, including physical data centers, as well as other AWS facilities, customer-facing enterprises and products

The Environmental team has responsibility for architecting and implementing AWS's global environmental programs. This includes defining and implementing risk management and compliance systems and driving their continuous improvement; setting and refining global policies and procedures; overseeing the development of standards, tools, auditing and metrics, and employee training; ensuring effective engagement by environmental teams on global initiatives, including those that are part of Amazon's ambitious sustainability goals; providing specialist expertise; and engaging with all AWS business units to provide scalable and effective compliance strategies that support current and future business objectives while ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.
About the team
You'll join the Air Quality Team Modelling Group (AQTMG), AWS's specialized air quality modeling experts who deliver expert air dispersion modeling and regulatory compliance support that enables data center development across the Americas while protecting air quality and public health. As force multipliers for partner teams including Due Diligence, Global Environmental Services, Design Engineering, and Reliability, the team runs sophisticated computer simulations (AERMOD) to predict how air pollutants disperse in the atmosphere, ensuring compliance with all applicable air quality standards

The team maintains the highest standards of technical accuracy and regulatory compliance, engaging proactively throughout the data center development lifecycle to provide timely, actionable insights. The AQTMG is building world-class environmental expertise and innovative modeling solutions, working toward full in-house modeling capability while continuously advancing capabilities through automation and standardization. Through technical excellence, collaborative problem-solving, and continuous innovation, the team supports AWS's broader environmental commitments by ensuring all data center operations contribute to clean air and environmental protection while enabling sustainable infrastructure expansion.
