How much do entry level air dispersion modeling jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 8, 2026, the average yearly pay for entry level air dispersion modeling in the United States is $130,000.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $125,000.00 and $135,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by entry-level air dispersion modelers, and how can they be addressed?

Entry-level air dispersion modelers often encounter challenges such as interpreting complex environmental regulations, learning to use specialized modeling software (e.g., AERMOD, CALPUFF), and ensuring the accuracy of large datasets. Navigating these challenges requires strong attention to detail, a willingness to seek guidance from senior modelers, and proactive engagement in ongoing training. Working closely with experienced team members and participating in industry workshops or webinars can help new professionals quickly build confidence and expertise.

What is an entry level air dispersion modeling job?

An entry level air dispersion modeling job involves using computer models to predict how pollutants move and disperse in the atmosphere. Professionals in this role assist with preparing environmental reports, analyzing air quality data, and ensuring that industrial or development projects comply with environmental regulations. They often work under the guidance of senior scientists or engineers, learning to use specialized modeling software and interpreting results to help protect public health and the environment.

What is the difference between Entry Level Air Dispersion Modeling vs Entry Level Environmental Technician?

AspectEntry Level Air Dispersion ModelingEntry Level Environmental Technician
CredentialsBachelor's in environmental science, engineering, or related field; familiarity with modeling softwareBachelor's in environmental science, biology, or related field; basic field sampling skills
Work EnvironmentOffice-based, computer modeling, data analysisFieldwork, site assessments, sample collection
Industry UsageAir quality, pollution control, regulatory complianceEnvironmental monitoring, site remediation, compliance testing

While both roles support environmental goals, Entry Level Air Dispersion Modeling focuses on computer-based air quality modeling, whereas Entry Level Environmental Technicians perform field sampling and site assessments. The roles complement each other within environmental projects but differ in daily tasks and skill sets.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Air Dispersion Modeler, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Air Dispersion Modeler, you need a background in environmental science, atmospheric science, or engineering, with strong analytical and mathematical skills. Familiarity with air dispersion modeling software (such as AERMOD or CALPUFF), GIS tools, and regulatory guidelines is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective written and verbal communication are important soft skills for interpreting data and collaborating with project teams. These skills and qualities are vital for producing accurate modeling results that inform environmental impact assessments and regulatory compliance.
