Job description

#1628 - Deputy Chief Actuary
Seeking executive-level Deputy Chief Actuary to support the Chief Actuary and the New York State and Local Retirement System (NYSLRS), as part of the actuarial team internal to OSC. Ideal candidate will have substantial project management and actuarial expertise, including actuarial valuations, experience studies, and personnel management. Additional experience with gain/loss analysis, regulatory compliance, pricing valuations for legislative proposals, and public sector employment a plus.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) AND eight (8) years of actuarial experience.

OR
  • Associate of the Society of Actuaries (ASA) AND Enrolled Actuary (EA) AND eight (8) years of actuarial experience.

OR
  • Associate of the Society of Actuaries (ASA) AND ten (10) years of pension experience with four (4) years of experience supervising actuaries (may be concurrent).

Preferred Qualifications/Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Preferred Qualifications
  • FSA in the retirement benefits track with EA credentials.
  • History working in the public pension arena.
  • Experience leading (not merely supervising) a team of actuaries whose specialized skills and knowledge may outmatch your own.
  • Experience supporting decision makers while maintaining a neutral tone.

Knowledge
  • Fluency in ASOPs related to the pension practice area.
  • Proficiency in SQL and Microsoft Access.
  • Expertise in data analytics and Tableau.

Skills
  • Ability to manage a small team with care and camaraderie.
  • Ability to facilitate then leverage enthusiasm.
  • Experience developing high-level solutions, passing through minutia only when necessary.
  • Experience explaining complex actuarial work in a helpful manner, with a level of detail suited to the audience.

Abilities
  • Ability to work pragmatically.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and issue recommendations with humility.
