What is a TechOps?

TechOps, short for Technical Operations, refers to the teams and processes responsible for maintaining, monitoring, and supporting an organization's IT infrastructure and systems. This includes ensuring the reliability, availability, and performance of servers, networks, databases, and applications. TechOps professionals handle incident response, troubleshooting, deployment, and system upgrades to minimize downtime and support business operations. Their work is essential to keeping technology services running smoothly and securely.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a TechOps professional?

To thrive as a TechOps professional, you need a solid understanding of IT infrastructure, systems administration, networking, and troubleshooting, often supported by a degree in computer science or related certifications. Familiarity with monitoring tools (like Nagios or Datadog), cloud platforms (AWS, Azure), scripting languages, and configuration management systems is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to work under pressure help TechOps professionals stand out. These skills ensure the reliability, security, and efficiency of technology operations that support critical business functions.

How does a TechOps professional typically collaborate with development and support teams in a fast-paced environment?

TechOps professionals serve as a bridge between development, operations, and support teams, ensuring seamless deployment and maintenance of applications. They frequently participate in cross-functional meetings to coordinate releases, troubleshoot incidents, and implement automation for smoother workflows. Close collaboration is essential for quickly resolving issues, optimizing system performance, and maintaining high availability. This teamwork-oriented approach helps TechOps professionals stay proactive in identifying and addressing potential challenges before they impact users.

Job description

Operations Director – Baseball

Reports to: Head of Baseball
Contract: Full‑Time, Permanent
Location: Atlanta, GA required.

Role Overview

The Operations Director owns how we run baseball systems across MLB, MiLB, NCAA and international venues. This role unifies Hawk‑Eye and KinaTrax operational practices, leading live service delivery, staffing, logistics, capacity planning and continuous improvement. The Operations Director ensures that every game and lab operates smoothly, so the Head of Baseball can focus on long‑term growth. The role does not own technology deployment (TechOps) or product direction (Solution Owners), but does hold TechOps and other teams accountable to operational timelines and standards.

Responsibilities

Operational Strategy & Execution

  • Define operational strategy, goals and budgets for live game services, training labs and implementation.

  • Lead Implementation and Live Operations teams; unify Hawk‑Eye and KinaTrax procedures and quality standards.

  • Establish standard operating procedures (SOPs) covering installations, event logistics, equipment handling and remote support; drive continuous improvement and compliance.

Staffing & Scheduling

  • Develop scalable staffing models and rosters to service 25,000+ games across professional, collegiate and international baseball.

  • Oversee recruitment, training, performance management and development of operations managers, field service engineers and seasonal staff.

  • Coordinate remote operations resources and escalation on‑call schedules.

Budget & Resource Management

  • Own the operations budget (salaries, third‑party labour, travel and expenses, cloud and other costs).

  • Work with Project Managers, Procurement and Finance to forecast and manage inventory, equipment rotation and spare‑parts strategies.

  • Provide cost and resource visibility to all teams.

Cross‑Functional Coordination & Customer Success

  • Partner with Commercial and Account Management to support customer onboarding, renewals and escalation resolution.

  • Ensure smooth handoff from Implementation/Project Management into live operations; coordinate with TechOps on maintenance windows and upgrades.

  • Provide regular operational performance reports and recommendations to the Head of Baseball and executive leadership.

Your Qualifications & Skills
  • 7–10+ years’ experience managing large‑scale operations or service delivery functions in sports technology, broadcast or mission‑critical environments.

  • Proven ability to lead distributed teams, build SOPs and manage complex scheduling across multiple venues.

  • Strong financial management skills; experience managing budgets and vendor contracts.

  • Excellent communication and leadership skills; ability to resolve escalations and inspire high‑performing teams.

Desirable Qualifications & Skills

  • Experience operating camera‑based tracking or broadcast systems.

  • Familiarity with MLB, MiLB, NCAA and international baseball logistics.

  • Certification in operations management or Lean/Six Sigma.

Why This Is the Right Opportunity for You

This position is perfect for you if you're looking to play a pivotal role in delivering world‑class baseball data to leagues, teams and fans, while shaping operational excellence in a fast‑growing, technology‑driven environment. You'll build scalable processes, lead a high‑performing team and ensure every system installation meets the highest standards, giving the Head of Baseball the space to focus on strategic growth initiatives.

This role is not a Product Owner, TechOps Director, Systems & Sales Engineering Manager, Programme Manager or Commercial Manager; it sits alongside these functions, holding them accountable to operational standards rather than owning their remit.

Team Culture

At Hawk-Eye, we pride ourselves on a collaborative, high-performance culture where trust, passion, and innovation thrive. We believe in fostering an environment where every team member is empowered to push boundaries and contribute to the future of sports technology. Our work is guided by three core values:

  • We are Brave: We challenge the status quo, embrace big ideas, and constantly seek new ways to innovate in the sports entertainment industry. We aren't afraid to take risks in pursuit of excellence.

  • We are Owners: We take personal accountability for our work, our decisions, and our collective success. We celebrate our wins together and treat every challenge as an opportunity to learn, grow, and improve.

  • We are Inclusive: We believe our diversity makes us stronger. We cultivate a welcoming environment where unique perspectives are valued, all while being united by our shared love for sports and technology.
