What is technology sales?

Technology sales refers to the process of selling tech-related products or services, such as software, hardware, or IT solutions, to businesses or consumers. Professionals in technology sales identify customer needs, demonstrate product features, negotiate contracts, and provide ongoing support. The goal is to help clients solve problems or improve operations through the adoption of new technologies. Careers in this field often require a mix of technical knowledge and strong communication skills.

What are careers in technology sales?

Technology sales jobs include titles such as account manager, sales executive, and sales representative. In these jobs, you often work collaboratively to sell hardware, software, and tech products and services to customers. As an account manager, your responsibilities include developing and managing client accounts, networking to create a portfolio of clients, and acting as a liaison between the company and its customers. As a sales executive, your duties include providing guidance and support to customers, looking for ways to remain current with the products the company offers, maintaining your territory, and collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information for sales and product reports. As a sales representative, you generate sales leads, sell directly to customers, make cold calls to recruit new customers, and provide customer service to clients.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technology sales professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technology Sales professional, you need strong knowledge of technology products, solution selling techniques, and a background in business or related fields, often demonstrated by a relevant degree or sales experience. Familiarity with CRM platforms like Salesforce, sales automation tools, and technical product demos is essential. This collaboration is crucial for crafting solutions that meet client needs and for resolving any technical concerns that arise during negotiations. Strong teamwork and communication skills are essential for success in this aspect of the role.

Role Overview

Bloomberg is a global leader in business and financial information, news and insight, and we use innovative technology to deliver trusted data and bring transparency to the financial markets. Our customers around the globe rely on us for the information and tools they need to make critical investment decisions and remain connected across all sides of the financial community.

The Bloomberg Financial Solutions department is at the forefront of ensuring success for our customers and employees alike. Our team comprises several key pillars: sales, service, operations, culture and brand. As a department, we are united by a common goal: to create meaningful relationships with clients by understanding their needs and delivering exceptional end‑to‑end support from sales and implementation through their ongoing relationship with Bloomberg.

We’re looking for someone to join the Real‑time Solution Sales team, responsible for sales of Real‑Time services that include real‑time data feeds, API Microservices, and flagship products such as Server API (SAPI) and Bloomberg’s Consolidated Market Data Feed (B‑Pipe). You’ll work closely with clients and prospects to gain a clear understanding of their business needs, and provide consultative solutions to build stronger relationships.

You’ll need a deep understanding of the flow of real‑time market data around a financial organisation, who uses it and what for, especially within Front Office applications. You will demonstrate how the quality, reliability and timeliness of Bloomberg content and services help clients improve processes and comply with new regulations, and provide sales insight on the benefits of leveraging our cutting‑edge technology.

Responsibilities
  • Drive annual sales and revenue targets for a defined territory
  • Collaborate with Enterprise Data salespeople and Services Delivery Teams to identify and manage new Real‑Time Solutions sales opportunities until close, and expand usage and revenue of existing solutions within existing accounts
  • Work with the Enterprise Data Product team on trends and provide constant feedback to Product teams from a sales perspective
  • Build and execute sales strategies at both account and country level, collaborating with other internal sales and account management groups as required
  • Validate client workflow and engage the appropriate sales team and technical resources when necessary
  • Assist Terminal Sales and Enterprise Sales members on learning how to identify Real‑Time Solutions sales opportunities
  • Diligently track and manage all customer interactions within the Company CRM system
  • Effectively build a sales pipeline and accurately manage forecasts throughout the sales cycle
  • Maintain frequent client and prospect interaction through sales calls and onsite visits
  • Maintain strong product knowledge of the full Technical Solutions suite, its integration points with other Bloomberg products and competitor/3rd‑party offerings, and its deployment options (on‑site, CLOUD, …)
  • Acquire knowledge of customer technology stacks and workflows
Qualifications
  • Ability to manage change at a fast pace
  • Solution‑oriented mindset
  • Curiosity for constant learning that transforms itself into the ability to deliver results
  • Experience in enterprise solutions selling in or to the local financial markets is highly desirable
  • In‑depth understanding of our customers’ business and workflow for both buy and sell‑side institutions
  • Strong track record in consultative selling
  • Proven ability to manage an accurate pipeline from initial lead to close
  • In‑depth knowledge of Order Management Systems, trading workflows, and real‑time data environments
  • Skilled in establishing, developing and maintaining key relationships within strategic accounts, including senior client relationships at CxO levels
  • Ability to work within a collaborative environment to achieve results
  • Familiarity with real‑time market data feeds and market‑data distribution platforms is desirable
  • Familiarity with network basics, public cloud and on‑prem integrations
