Job description

Performs a variety of duties in the operating room area to assist the surgical team. Participates in quality assessment and continuous quality improvement activities. Complies with all appropriate safety and infection control standards. Performs all job duties and responsibilities in a courteous and customer focused manner according to the Hurley Family Standards of Behavior.Works under the direction of a Nurse Manager or registered professional nurse.

  • High School graduate and/or GED equivalent.
  • Completion of an accredited or military Surgical Technology Program.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to maintain empathetic attitude toward patients.
  • Ability to keep records and make reports; sufficient strength to lift moderately heavy objects.
  • Ability to interact effectively with patients, physicians, Medical Center staff and the public.
  • NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Certification or eligibility for certification as a Surgical Technician from the National Association of Certified Surgical Technology preferred.
  • NOTE: Incumbents with less than two (2) years of experience as a surgical technician will be allocated to a Level 18. Incumbents with two (2) years or more years of experience as a surgical technician will be allocated to a Level 20.
    1. Prepares for operative procedures; ensures necessary supplies, instruments, and equipment are available and ready for use.

    2. Assists with transporting patients to and from operating room; verifies patient's identification and assists with lifting and positioning of patient for surgical procedures.

    3. Performs patient skin preparation prior to surgery as directed.

    4. Scrubs on all types of operative procedures; anticipates the needs of the surgeon and assists as directed; handles surgical instruments, sutures sponges, etc.

    5. Maintains an accurate count of sponges, needles, and instruments; ensures that all are accounted for during and after the procedure.

    6. Responsible for the proper preparation, care and handling of surgical specimens.

    7. Assists with circulating for all types of operative procedures; keeps surgical team supplied with materials; adjusts lighting and other equipment; maintains operative records and labels specimens.

    8. Maintains strict aseptic techniques and identification and correction of breaks in techniques.

    9. Observes patient's condition while in the O.R. area and during transport to recovery area; reports any change to the nurse in charge.

    10. Maintains a clean and safe operating room environment; washes carts, shelves, sinks and equipment; sterilizes equipment.

    11. Assists in orientation of personnel newly assigned to area.

    12. Attends education/developmental programs as assigned.

    13. Demonstrates effective judgment and ability to understand, react effectively and treat (if appropriate) the unique needs of patient age groups served.

    14. Performs other related duties as assigned. Utilizes new improvements and/or technologies that relate to job assignment.
