Position Summary

The Production & Technology Manager is responsible for the planning, operation, maintenance, and strategic development of all production, broadcast, audiovisual, lighting, communications, and event technology systems for the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena. This position oversees NCAA Division I athletic presentations, concerts, commencements, conferences, and special events while ensuring the reliable operation of venue technology infrastructure and leading future technology initiatives.

This role pays an annual salary of $68,000-$72,000

Benefits for Full-Time roles: Health, Dental and Vision Insurance, 401(k) Savings Plan, 401(k) matching, and Paid Time Off (vacation days, sick days, and 11 holidays).

About the Venue

A state-of-the-art, multi-purpose facility, the Thomas M. Ryan Center, located on the University of Rhode Island campus in scenic South County, opened its doors in June 2002. Home to URI Men's and Women's Basketball programs, the Ryan Center also features the URI football teams' locker room, along with athletic department offices, training rooms, players' lounges, and a souvenir store. The venue seats 8,000 for basketball and over 6,300 for concerts, family shows, lectures, and other community events. The Ryan Center was designed and built to meet all ADA specifications to accommodate our guests with disabilities. Located in Kingston, the Center draws on an audience of over 1.4 million people within a 40-mile radius.

Responsibilities
  • Plan, prepare, and execute all aspects of NCAA Division I game presentation, including game scripting, programming video displays, testing production assets, and ensuring sponsorship fulfillment.
  • Consult with Learfield, URI Athletics, and Ryan Center marketing staff on digital display presentation and placement for all events. Assist customers in the design and layout aspects of their production.
  • Manage all aspects of game production, including securing graphics within the specified timeframe from sponsorship groups and athletics programming, all received content to arena displays based on the given game script, testing of video and audio assets prior to each game, and sponsorship fulfillment reports.
  • Manage and maintain Daktronics display systems, including Show Control, Venus Control Suite, Venus 1500, display controllers, replay integration, statistics interfaces, and related production hardware.
  • Organize and dispatch live production equipment, including cameras, audio equipment, headset communications, external recorders, downstream video routers, streaming setups, and all signal and/or power cabling required to do so.
  • Act as the main support contact for URI Athletics' game operations (MBB/WBB) as they relate to in-house displays and systems, i.e., statistics displays, video replay, scoring/officiating, and media personnel workstations.
  • Manage all video, audio, technology, and communications systems for concerts, athletic events, commencements, cheer competitions, trade shows, conferences, and other venue events through in-house staff or third-party production providers.
  • Serve as the primary coordinator for all broadcast operations, including television compound planning, truck parking and power distribution, camera positions, broadcast infrastructure, fiber connectivity, and coordination with ESPN, television partners, and third-party production companies.
  • Manage outdoor digital marquees and corresponding Venus 1500 software, including scheduling and maintenance.
  • Select, train, schedule, motivate, and evaluate staff. Provide and coordinate staff training on video production, including training on proper operations and maintenance procedures; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline and termination procedures.
  • Develop and oversee preventative maintenance programs for all production, broadcast, audio, video, lighting, scoring, communications, digital signage, IPTV, and event technology systems.
  • Act as the liaison with clients and vendors for any video, audio, telecommunication, and IT requests, including working with service contract providers.
  • Oversee the hiring of third-party audio and video companies when necessary.
  • Plan, direct, coordinate, and review the work plan for facility maintenance and operations specifically as it relates to technology; meet with staff to identify and resolve problems; assign work activities, projects, and programs; monitor workflow; review and evaluate work products, methods, and procedures.
  • Oversee production and technology budget as well as assist in budget preparation of supplies, equipment, and major purchases. Research, evaluate, recommend, and implement emerging production and venue technologies while developing long-range technology replacement plans and capital improvement projects.
  • Develop and maintain an accurate record/inventory system. Order supplies and materials for maintenance programs within budget guidelines; receive and maintain supplies. Organize all audio/video equipment of all sizes for quick availability to select when sudden event needs arise.
  • Manage vendor relationships, service contracts, warranties, software licensing, and third-party technology providers to ensure reliable operation of all venue systems.
  • Collaborate with University Information Technology to maintain secure, reliable, and compliant operation of all production, broadcast, scoring, IPTV, and network-connected technology systems.
  • Maintain comprehensive inventories of production equipment, replacement parts, software licensing, and technology assets.
  • Serve as the venue's subject matter expert for production technology, evaluating operational needs and recommending improvements that enhance guest experience, event presentation, operational efficiency, and system reliability.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required, which occur often.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Production, Communications, Information Technology, Audio Engineering, Event Production, Theatre Technology, or a related field; equivalent experience may be substituted.
  • 3-5 years of progressively responsible experience in live event production, broadcast operations, arena technology, or entertainment venue management.
  • Demonstrated experience managing live video production, broadcast operations, and audiovisual systems.
  • Functional knowledge of audio and video systems to include but not limited to broadcast cameras, switchers, replay systems, video routers, streaming systems, and digital production workflows.
  • Experience with Daktronics systems, including Show Control, Venus Control Suite, and Venus 1500, preferred.
  • Working knowledge of professional audio systems, digital mixing consoles, DSP systems, and audio signal routing.
  • Experience with arena lighting systems, show lighting, and lighting control software preferred.
  • Working knowledge of networking concepts related to production systems, IPTV, AV-over-IP, and digital communications.
  • Able to perform IT and network troubleshooting, server directory maintenance, and liaising with university and third-party IT staff.
  • Knowledgeable in digital cable television systems and can perform basic troubleshooting for cable receivers and keep inventory of them.
  • Knowledgeable in audio/video signal routing.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Cloud applications, including Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Illustrator, Media Encoder, and After Effects.
  • Experience preparing departmental budgets, capital improvement requests, and equipment replacement plans.
  • Strong organizational, project management, leadership, and customer service skills.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced event environment.
  • Experience managing full-time, part-time, student, and contract staff.
  • Ability to work independently while fostering collaboration across multiple departments.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects, climb stairs and ladders, and work safely in accordance with OSHA standards. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours based on the event schedule.
