Job description

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's Engineering Division is seeking a Mechanical Technology Student Assistant to support the LBNL Mechanical Technology Engineering Teams. This part-time variable hours position (up to 20 hrs/week during the semester and up to 40 hours/week during breaks) offers hands-on experience on engineering projects and R&D efforts.

This position involves working closely with the Mechanical Technicians assigned to various programs and projects in LBNL including the Advanced Light Source (ALS) and other science projects and  programs at LBNL as well as the engineering shops. Joining the technology group offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge scientific research and technology development.

What You Will Do:

  • Assist with and learn about routine technical work including fabrication, assembling, machining, installing, set up, operating, testing, inspecting, maintaining, troubleshooting, or modifying standard apparatus, parts and components, devices, equipment, processes or systems associated with mechanisms, particle accelerators, optical systems, vacuum systems, particle detectors, cryogenic equipment and related scientific research apparatus.
  • Assist with, and learn, many different mechanical disciplines required to build a particle accelerator.
  • Develop skills in installing, maintaining and troubleshooting technical and scientific equipment.
  • Assist with and learn about utilizing a wide variety of metallic and non-metallic materials, formulations and processes.
  • Advanced candidates will have the opportunity to gain experience in areas of vacuum systems and cryogenic equipment.

Additional Responsibilities as Needed:

  • Operate calculators to perform calculations or measurements necessary to help accomplish assignments.
  • Operate personal computers or computer terminals to access and/or document information on parts, components and materials or specifications.

What is Required:

  • Student in good academic standing, currently enrolled in a similar technical program, preferably a specialized technical or trade school.
  • General understanding of Quality Assurance principles.
  • Basic understanding of engineering principles.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Doc platform.
  • Basics familiarity hand tools, power tools, and a machine shop environment and safety principles. 

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Familiarity or proficiency with mechanical CAD modeling.

Notes:

  • This is a part-time (8-16 hours/week) 1-year, student assistant appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • Salary will be predetermined based on student step rates.
  • The starting hourly wage for this position ranges from $19.18 to $25.18, depending on the number of years of education completed by the applicant. Candidates should note that they are responsible for covering their own housing and travel expenses.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
