Job description

This internship opportunity is only available to graduate students currently enrolled at select APA Internal Internship Program academic partner institutions: Howard University, Montclair State University, or University of Virginia. Applications from students outside of these academic institutions will not be considered.

About the Office & Position:

Psychology Team: Executive Lead Education

Reporting and working directly with the executive lead psychologist for education for the APA, you will develop resources and presentations/webinars that show the application of psychological science (agency, belonging, cognitive strategies) to students, educators, and educational systems.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Conduct rapid evidence and field scans (literature, policy, and practice) and translate findings into short, decision-ready briefs and summaries.
  • Support project coordination across internal and external partners by tracking timelines, synthesizing meeting notes into next steps, and maintaining clear documentation.
  • Create and refine communications and materials (slides, one-pagers, stakeholder updates) that translate technical content into plain language for education leaders.
  • Interns will generally be expected to work for a minimum of 10 hours (including approximately 1 hour of Internal Internship Programming) per week. Specific hour-to-academic credit ratios will be agreed upon between the internโ€™s university and the APA hiring team.

Expected Learning Objectives & Professional Advancement Opportunities:

  • Build skill in turning complex research and practice knowledge into clear, usable guidance for system-level decision-makers.
  • Gain experience in cross-functional collaboration by supporting real projects with multiple stakeholders, timelines, and competing constraints.
  • Develop a portfolio of professional products (briefs, decks, scans) demonstrating strategic writing, synthesis, and project management.

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong critical thinking, creative, and organizational skills a must.
  • Preferred: Education/ Educational Psychology; PhD level.
  • We are currently only accepting applications only for interns who are (1) in graduate school [Masterโ€™s or PhD], (2) able to receive academic credit from their school for their internship; (3) able to commit to a full year [September 2026-May 2027]; and (4) living/working in an APA-approved state (Internships at APA).
  • Enrollment at an APA Internal Internship Program academic partner institution (Howard University, Montclair State University, or University of Virginia) is required.

Job Location - Remote:ย APA internships may be considered for remote work eligibility as defined in APAโ€™s Flexible Work Policy and are subject to approval.ย Remote work interns may not work from the following states or U.S. territories:ย Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Guam, Hawaii, Iowa, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, U.S. Virgin Islands, Washington, Wyoming.ย
