Essential Job Duties
The intern will work closely alongside the research technician to develop skills necessary for future work in farm management including equipment maintenance, general field operations including planting, harvesting, cultivation, irrigation and fence maintenance. The intern will also help with several long-term improvement projects related to irrigation, weed identification and crop management plans, and assisting with the design, build, and trialing of three-point attached, custom mechanical cultivators for the Fike Agronomy Field Lab.
As an intern, you'll be involved in all aspects of farm production along with educational programming. You will develop proficiency in the following areas:
  • Planting and harvesting commodity crops
  • Fence maintenance and installation
  • Crop planning
  • Soil sensor and flume management
  • Soil health assessment
  • Safe tractor use and maintenance
  • Integrated pest management
  • Irrigation maintenance and installation
This position requires some farm experience - at least 6 months is ideal. However, it is expected that the intern will develop skills and knowledge on the job so a good attitude, strong interest in sustainable agriculture, and enthusiasm to learn will be essential for this role. The intern must also be a clear communicator, able to work with varied individuals, work independently when needed, and able to lift 45 pounds. This position works primarily outdoors, and activities will need to be completed under adverse weather conditions (cold, heat, humidity, rain, pollen) at times. Biting insects, snakes, and poison ivy are sometimes present on our farm.
