Description

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Technical Writer to support mission-critical operations for NORAD/NORTHCOM mission. The ideal candidate will be responsible for creating, revising, and maintaining technical documentation related to systems, processes, policies, and procedures in alignment with Department of Defense (DoD) standards and organizational goals.

Working closely with subject matter experts (SMEs), engineering teams, and project managers, this individual will translate complex technical concepts into clear, concise, and accurate documentation for both technical and non-technical audiences. The Technical Writer will play a key role in ensuring that the command’s written resources meet all mission, operational, and compliance requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

Documentation Development:

  • Create, revise, and maintain technical documents, including user manuals, standard operating procedures (SOPs), operational guides, training materials, installation manuals, configuration guides, engineering designs, knowledge articles, and reports.
  • Ensure all documentation adheres to DoD standards, including compliance with applicable style guides like the DoD Visual Information Style Guide.

Collaborate with SMEs and Teams:

  • Work with subject matter experts (SMEs), engineers, and project teams to accurately capture complex technical details and translate them into professional, accessible documentation.
  • Participate in technical discussions, reviews, and project updates to stay informed of system and process changes that impact technical documentation.

Project and Task Management:

  • Lead documentation efforts for multiple concurrent projects.
  • Develop and deliver technical writing deliverables in accordance with the timeline and milestones defined by Program/Project Managers and DoD customers.
  • Organize, update, and maintain the command's documentation repository for easy access and reference.

Visual Content Creation:

  • Develop and integrate technical diagrams, flowcharts, and visual aids (using tools like MS Visio) to enhance document readability and comprehension.

Use tools like Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, and graphic editing software to create professional-grade written and visual deliverables.

Qualifications

TYPICAL EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelors and six (6) years or more of related experience; Masters and four (4) years or more experience; PhD and 0 years related experience.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree and 6 years of experience with a Technical Degree with experience writing Communications, Technical Writing, or a. Equivalent experience may be accepted in lieu of a degree with at least 10+ years of experience providing technical documentation, preferably in support of DoD, federal agencies, or military systems and programs.

Demonstrated experience with DoD-specific documentation, such as Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), or technical manuals (e.g., MIL-STD format).

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in technical writing tools, including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Visio, Adobe Acrobat, and other Microsoft Office Suite applications.
  • Demonstrated understanding of military terminology, technology, and technical standards.
  • Familiarity with configuration management tools and practices to maintain document version control.
  • Edit, proofread, and standardize documentation to ensure grammatical, technical, and contextual accuracy.

Communication Skills:

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a strong eye for detail, grammar, and syntax.
  • Ability to deliver technical information to diverse audiences, from engineers and developers to end users and executive leadership.
  • Preferred Skills & Qualifications:

Familiarity with DoD directives, standards, and instructions, such as:

DoD Instruction 5025.13 (DoD Directives Program).

MIL-STD-38784 (Technical Manual Preparation).

NIST 800-53 and DoD RMF documentation requirements.

  • Experience with Content Management Systems (CMS) or document repositories (i.e., SharePoint, Confluence, or similar platforms).

  • Knowledge of Agile methodologies and experience supporting software development lifecycles (Agile, DevOps, DevSecOps).
  • Basic graphic design capabilities using Adobe Creative Cloud or equivalent tools for visual aids.
  • Additional certifications (e.g., Certified Professional Technical Communicator (CPTC), Advanced Technical Writing or Editing Certifications).
