They coordinate cross-functional teams, set project goals, manage timelines and budgets, and ensure that technical solutions align with business objectives. Their role often involves risk management, stakeholder communication, and problem-solving to keep projects on track. Unlike traditional project managers, they typically possess strong technical backgrounds and work closely with engineering, IT, or development teams. Their expertise helps bridge the gap between technical teams and business stakeholders, ensuring project success.

How does a technical project program manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project lifecycle?

Technical Project Program Managers often act as a bridge between engineering, product, design, and business teams. They facilitate communication by organizing regular sync meetings, tracking progress, and clarifying project requirements. This ensures that all stakeholders are aligned on goals, timelines, and deliverables. Successful collaboration relies on strong interpersonal skills and the ability to translate technical details for non-technical teams while managing dependencies and addressing potential roadblocks promptly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technical project program manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Project Program Manager, you need strong project management skills, technical acumen, and experience with methodologies like Agile or Waterfall, often supported by a relevant degree and certifications such as PMP or Scrum Master. Familiarity with project management tools (e.g., Jira, Asana, MS Project) and enterprise systems is typically required. Exceptional leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills help navigate cross-functional teams and complex projects. These competencies are crucial for delivering projects on time, aligning technical solutions with business goals, and driving organizational success.

Job description

Title: Technical Program Manager

Location: Hybrid in Cupertino, CA

Duration: 12+ months

Compensation: $50-65/hr

Work Requirements: US Citizen, GC Holders or Authorized to Work in the U.S.

We are seeking a Technical Project Manager with a strong background in AI/ML and technical program delivery to lead end-to-end execution and release management across two key products. This role will own the delivery lifecycle; from requirements gathering and sprint planning through release cadence, deployment, and production launch.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on, highly organized TPM who thrives in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment and can effectively bridge engineering teams and business stakeholders. As the organization expands its AI capabilities, this role will also have opportunities to support Generative AI initiatives and work closely with teams building and evaluating AI-powered solutions.

THE OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU

In this role, you will drive end-to-end technical project and release management for multiple products, establishing clear delivery plans, sprint schedules, release dates, and deployment processes. You will partner closely with engineering, product, and business teams to understand requirements, assess team capacity, scope work, manage dependencies, and ensure initiatives progress efficiently from planning through production.

You will serve as a key point of connection between technical teams and business partners, translating business needs into actionable technical plans while maintaining visibility into risks, blockers, dependencies, and delivery status. You will operate in an environment where priorities can move quickly, requiring strong ownership and the ability to drive issues to closure. Over time, you will also contribute to Generative AI programs, helping coordinate initiatives involving model testing, evaluation, privacy, and responsible deployment.

KEY SUCCESS FACTORS

1. Technical Project Management & Release Leadership

  • 3-8 years of technical project/program management experience, with demonstrated success owning complex initiatives from requirements and planning through deployment and production release.
  • Strong release management experience, including establishing release cadence, coordinating sprint and release dates, managing dependencies, tracking risks, and driving multiple products through successful launches.
  • Hands-on, self-starter mentality with the ability to understand technical requirements, team composition, capacity, and scope while proactively removing blockers and driving work to closure.

2. Agile Delivery & Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Hands-on experience operating in Agile environments, including Scrum, Kanban, or hybrid methodologies, with responsibility for sprint planning, backlog management, prioritization, milestones, and cross-team dependencies.
  • Proven ability to coordinate across engineering, product, AI/ML, and business teams, translating requirements into executable project plans and maintaining alignment throughout delivery.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to provide clear executive/stakeholder updates, technical documentation, risk assessments, and delivery status reporting in a fast-paced environment.

3. AI/ML & Generative AI Knowledge

  • Strong foundational understanding of AI/ML and Generative AI concepts, with the ability to translate business requirements into meaningful technical discussions with engineering and AI teams.
  • Familiarity with areas such as prompt engineering, model behavior, red teaming, testing and validation methodologies, privacy/data handling, output evaluation, and the AI/ML model lifecycle.
  • Experience working directly with or alongside AI/ML or Generative AI engineering teams, with enough technical depth to understand requirements, dependencies, risks, and considerations involved in delivering AI-powered products.

NICE TO HAVES

  • Prior professional experience in software engineering, application development, or another hands-on technical role.
  • Experience supporting or delivering Generative AI products or platforms in a production environment.
  • Familiarity with the software development lifecycle (SDLC), CI/CD processes, and production deployment workflows.
  • Experience managing multiple products or concurrent releases with complex cross-functional dependencies.
