What is a technical project manager?

A technical project manager oversees the development of a new piece of technology or computer program. Their job duties are to create a schedule for the technical team to follow, identify important goals during the project, and ensure that a project is delivered on-time. They must also maintain careful track of the team’s progress and address any issues that may crop up during the development cycle. A technical project manager often makes reports to stakeholders and other interested parties about the timetable of the project and inform them of any issues.

How do technical project managers typically balance technical leadership with project delivery responsibilities?

Technical Project Managers often face the challenge of balancing hands-on technical guidance with overseeing project timelines, budgets, and stakeholder communication. They regularly collaborate with engineering teams to assess technical risks, clarify requirements, and troubleshoot issues, while also ensuring that project milestones are met and resources are allocated efficiently. Success in this role requires strong organizational skills, the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, and adaptability to shifting priorities. Many Technical Project Managers work in cross-functional teams, acting as a bridge between technical staff and business leaders to keep everyone aligned toward project goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technical project manager?

To thrive as a Technical Project Manager, you need a solid grounding in project management methodologies, technical expertise relevant to the industry, and typically a bachelor's degree in a related field. Familiarity with tools like Jira, Trello, Microsoft Project, and certifications such as PMP or Agile/Scrum credentials are highly valuable. Strong leadership, problem-solving abilities, and excellent communication skills distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies are crucial for effectively leading projects to successful completion, aligning technical teams, and managing stakeholder expectations.

In the near term, the BIM Manager performs hands-on coordination on active projects while hiring, building, and managing a distributed team of BIM coordinators across North America as the function scales.

This position requires regular travel (up to 50%) to project sites across the United States and Canada to support coordination, clash resolution, and field execution.

Job Summary:

  • Provide centralized BIM/VDC leadership and accountability across all Data Center projects.
  • Ensure effective MEP model coordination, clash resolution, and constructability analysis of models provided by design consultants, equipment manufacturers, and other third parties.
  • On all BIM matters, maintain alignment between trade partners, engineering contractors, vendors, and client-issued models.
  • Contribute to the team's identification of modularization and prefabrication opportunities that improve constructability, schedule, and repeatability.
  • Build, staff, and scale a distributed BIM coordination team that delivers consistent quality across projects.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Define and maintain the Data Center portfolio BIM standards, ensuring adherence to BIM Execution Plans (BXP), templates, naming conventions, and workflows.
  • Hire, onboard, train, and manage BIM coordinators across multiple North America locations.
  • Establish Level of Detail requirements and model-sharing protocols; operate within and adapt to each client's Common Data Environment (e.g., Autodesk Construction Cloud / BIM 360, Procore) and consultant standards.
  • Evaluate and implement BIM/VDC tools and emerging technology (reality capture, digital twin, automation).
  • Partner with preconstruction, project management, field, and MEP/prefab teams to align BIM with schedule and cost goals.
  • Run MEP model coordination, clash detection, and constructability analysis on models provided by design consultants, equipment manufacturers, and other third parties, coordinating mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems.
  • Lead coordination meetings with trade partners, engineers, and field teams, driving clash resolution to closure.
  • Manage federated models, model health, and quality across the project lifecycle, integrating models issued by consultants, vendors, and clients along with reality-capture data.
  • Support prefabrication and modularization opportunities central to mission-critical delivery (MEP racks, skids, electrical rooms, containment assemblies).
  • Own model-based deliverables: coordination drawings, quantities, 4D sequencing, and as-built/handover data where required.

Qualifications And Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management, Architecture, Engineering, or related field. Equivalent experience may be considered.
  • 10-15 years in BIM/VDC on commercial or industrial construction. Experience on mission-critical or data center is strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with Autodesk Revit and Navisworks, and the ability to work across multiple client Common Data Environments (Autodesk Construction Cloud / BIM 360, Procore) is required
  • Demonstrated hands‑on MEP coordination and clash detection on large, systems‑intensive projects
  • Prior experience leading or mentoring BIM staff; experience managing distributed or multi‑site teams a plus.
  • Exposure to prefabrication/modular project delivery and to fast‑track schedules typical of data center work.
  • Strong understanding of construction sequencing and how model data supports field execution.
  • Autodesk certifications and/or VDC credentials are preferred.
  • Familiarity with reality capture and coordination tools (e.g., Recap, point clouds) is a plus.
