What is a technical project manager in software?

A Technical Project Manager in software is a professional responsible for planning, executing, and overseeing software development projects. They bridge the gap between technical teams and stakeholders, ensuring that development goals align with business objectives. Their duties include managing timelines, budgets, resources, and risks while facilitating communication between developers, designers, and clients. Technical Project Managers often have a background in software engineering or IT, enabling them to understand technical challenges and guide teams effectively.

Technical Project Managers in software play a crucial role in bridging the gap between technical teams and business stakeholders. They often facilitate regular meetings, such as sprint planning and progress reviews, to ensure everyone is aligned on project goals and timelines. • Use Microsoft Office and AutoCAD tools to prepare documentation, reports, and drawings that support project planning and execution.
  • Apply knowledge of technical drawings to verify constructability, identify potential issues, and support field execution.

  • Background in mechanical engineering, construction, construction management, or engineering-related disciplines.
  • Demonstrated project management skills in coordinating multiple stakeholders and activities.
  • Experience supervising or managing personnel, particularly within skilled trades or construction environments.
  • Ability to evaluate safety compliance with local and national codes and work effectively with safety professionals.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification is highly desirable.
  • Experience with Toyota project management practices or similar automotive manufacturing environments.
  • Automotive paint process experience and familiarity with related equipment and systems.
  • Ability to understand and calculate utility costs and their impact on project feasibility and operations.
  • Experience working with third-party safety compliance contractors.
  • Exposure to large-scale green-field and brown-field industrial projects.
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills when working with contractors, engineers, and cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to adapt to changing project conditions and develop effective countermeasures for delays.
