Established in 2019 and venture-backed in 2023, the company is led by a team of globally recognized fusion scientists with a strong track record of building state-of-the-art stellarator fusion machines, together with veteran business leaders experienced in scaling companies and commercializing energy technologies.
If you are searching for the best new ideas and share our vision, join us as a Technical Project Manager. This is what you need to know:
Location: Knoxville, TN
Salary: Highly Competitive Plus Benefits
Contract: Permanent, full time
Reporting to: SVP Program Management
Your role in the mission:
Type One Energy are seeking a Technical Project Manager who will be responsible for supporting the execution of key technical programs critical to our fusion energy stellarator technologies. You will support program planning, milestone tracking, resource coordination, and risk management across a variety of technical projects. You will play a key integrative role, bridging engineering, physics, operations, supply chain, and leadership teams to ensure unified direction and program success. You will ensure there is strategic alignment, delivery excellence, and timely decision-making.
This is a hands-on, execution-focused role for someone who thrives in fast-paced, highly technical environments and can seamlessly transition between high-level program strategy and day-to-day coordination.
Responsibilities
  • Develop comprehensive project plans, execution strategies, and detailed schedules aligned with company objectives.
  • Serve as the central point of contact between technical teams, executive leadership, external vendors, and partner organizations.
  • Facilitate effective communication to ensure shared understanding of priorities, timelines, and constraints.
  • Collaborate with finance and operations to forecast budgets, manage expenditures, and track resource utilization.
  • Maintain a detailed risk register and proactively identify, assess, and mitigate program risks (technical, schedule, budgetary, operational).
  • Facilitate scenario planning and develop contingency strategies to address high-priority risks.
  • Define and monitor KPIs, milestones, and deliverables across multiple workstreams.
  • Create regular status reports, program dashboards, and executive briefings to communicate progress, risks, and strategic implications.
  • Implement and refine program management processes, tools, and documentation standards tailored to a fast-paced R&D environment.
  • Contribute to the development of company-wide best practices in technical program delivery and cross-functional collaboration.

What you'll need:
Required Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical field.
  • 5 + years of experience in project engineering or project management, ideally in a high-tech or R&D environment
  • Strong understanding of engineering and product development processes.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to navigate across technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proficiency in modern project management tools (e.g., Jira, Smartsheet, MS Project).
  • Solid organizational skills and a structured approach to problem-solving under ambiguity.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience
  • Advanced degree (M.S. or MBA) or project management certification is a plus.
  • PMP, PRINCE2, or Agile/Scrum certification.
  • Familiarity with fusion technologies, or large-scale experimental setups is highly desirable (e.g., vacuum systems, superconducting magnets, high-power RF, plasma diagnostics).
  • Experience in compliance-heavy environments (e.g., regulatory, safety, or quality standards relevant to energy, nuclear, or aerospace sectors) is highly desirable

We offer:
In addition to a basic salary and yearly bonus, you will also get...
  • A hybrid work policy
  • Stock options
  • Relocation allowance
  • Insurance plans
  • Retirement options
  • And many more great voluntary benefits
