What Is a Technical Program Manager?

A technical program manager oversees a company’s technical projects, such as implementing new network systems or developing new products. Job duties include supervising development teams, assessing work schedules, assessing productivity, and addressing any quality assurance issues that arise during production. Technical program managers are often responsible for creating reports to upper management based on the functions of the products and making suggestions on how to streamline future projects. They may also help the organization develop new strategies related to production and sales goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Technical Program Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Program Manager, you need a strong background in project management, software development processes, and a relevant technical degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with tools like Jira, Confluence, Agile methodologies, and PMP or Scrum certifications is highly beneficial. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills ensure seamless project delivery, effective team collaboration, and alignment between technical teams and business goals.

How do Technical Program Managers typically collaborate with engineering and product teams to ensure project success?

Technical Program Managers (TPMs) play a central role in facilitating communication and alignment between engineering, product, and other cross-functional teams. They work closely with product managers to define project requirements and prioritize deliverables, while coordinating with engineering to develop realistic timelines and resolve technical challenges. TPMs often lead regular meetings, track progress, and proactively address risks to keep everyone on the same page. Building strong relationships and fostering a culture of open dialogue are essential for TPMs to ensure projects stay on track and meet business goals.

Position Overview

Autodesk is leading the transformation of the AEC industry, integrating AI technology into our products. We're enhancing our applications with cloud-native capabilities, including data at scale, edge computing, AI-based solutions, and advanced 3D modeling and graphics. This innovation is happening across our flagship products-AutoCAD, Revit, and Construction Cloud-and Forma, our new Industry Cloud.

At Autodesk, we believe that Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) represent the biggest opportunity to improve the design and make experience for our customers. Autodesk's commitment to AI & ML has sponsorship from the office of the CTO, and executive leaders of the product organizations.

As a Principal Technical Program Manager on the AEC Solutions team, you will own execution and delivery for our visible, highly important AEC Generative AI program-coordinating cross-functional work to bring models and ML/data pipelines into production experiences for customers. You will be part of a versatile group of AI Researchers, ML Engineers, Software Architects, and Experience Designers who are building cutting-edge foundation models and generative AI tools for the AEC industry. You will partner across functions and groups to create delivery roadmaps, define clear scope, milestones, and success metrics, manage dependencies and risks, and ensure we deliver scalable, secure, reliable, efficient AI/ML solutions and platforms that meet product launch and operational requirements.

You will help drive the AEC Generative AI initiative by translating strategic direction and organization-level goals into executable workstreams with clear delivery outcomes. You will influence senior leadership and executive stakeholders as we make important technical decisions and resource commitments, and you will help establish delivery mechanisms that keep teams aligned and unblocked. You will also partner with Product, Engineering, Research, Legal/Privacy, Security, and Customer Success to define launch gates, go/no-go criteria, and operational readiness for delivered AI features.

Location: We support hybrid work, and you work near our Boston, Massachusetts or Toronto, Canada offices.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the AEC Generative AI Leadership team to plan, operationalize, and execute the AEC Generative AI vision with clear delivery outcomes

  • Drive end-to-end delivery planning (scope, milestones, resourcing, dependencies) across multiple teams and workstreams

  • Ensure tasks are coordinated, progress is consistently monitored, risks/issues are actively managed, and stakeholders are kept informed

  • Lead cross-organizational delivery projects to ensure overall alignment with organizational goals, timelines, and release commitments

  • Own delivery governance: establish cadence, dashboards/status reporting, decision logs, and escalation paths to keep execution on track

  • Identify, maintain, and grow key partnerships and collaborations with cross-functional, cross-organization stakeholders to enable successful delivery

  • Anticipate bottlenecks, lead escalations, make tradeoffs, and balance delivery needs versus technical constraints

  • Define release readiness criteria (quality, privacy, security, reliability, responsible AI, and operational readiness), and coordinate launch gates, go/no-go decisions, rollout, and post-launch stabilization

  • Simplify technical complexity and lead well-educated decisions across product, engineering, design, and research representatives

  • Communicate delivery progress across organizational boundaries and levels from individual contributors to senior executives

  • Define and continuously improve organization-wide processes for project delivery

  • Champion continuous learning and communication by helping the AEC Generative AI team build technical and soft skills through knowledge sharing, mentoring, and training opportunities

  • Supervise the update and creation of content in design resources to ensure accuracy and timeliness

  • Organize and provide essential administrative support for design meetings, reviews, and delivery team members

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5+ years of Program Management and Strategic Planning experience

  • BS or MS in Statistics, Computer Science, Machine Learning, Data Science or other related fields

  • Previous experience in AI technology and practices, with a focus on how to apply AI in commercialized professional products.

  • Prior experience leading a product through initial research to a commercially available offering.

  • Embody data-driven decision-making while ensuring an inclusive and collaborative culture

  • Experience managing teams with a collaborative and empowering approach

  • Exceptional communication and influencing skills

  • Experience in the AEC industry, Autodesk products such as Revit, and AEC data schemas and standards.

  • Experience building scalable and resilient data ingestion and processing pipelines, monitoring and self-healing systems that power AI-based solutions for AEC workflows

  • Experience working with scrum and Agile development processes and methodologies

  • Comfortable with a dynamic business structure and able to adapt to changes swiftly

  • Have a business degree
