What are Technical Product Managers?

Technical Product Managers are professionals who oversee the development, launch, and improvement of technology-driven products. They work at the intersection of engineering, design, and business, translating customer needs into product requirements and collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver solutions. Unlike general product managers, technical product managers typically have a strong technical background, allowing them to communicate effectively with engineering teams and make informed decisions about the technical aspects of the product. Their role often involves prioritizing features, defining the product roadmap, and ensuring that technical solutions align with business goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Technical Product Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Product Manager, you need a solid understanding of product lifecycle management, technical acumen (often supported by a degree in computer science or engineering), and experience translating business needs into technical requirements. Familiarity with tools like Jira, Agile methodologies, and product analytics platforms, as well as certifications such as Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO), are commonly expected. Strong communication, stakeholder management, and problem-solving abilities help set top performers apart. These skills ensure that products are developed efficiently, meet market demands, and align with business goals.

What is the difference between Technical Product vs Product Manager?

AspectTechnical ProductProduct Manager
Required CredentialsTechnical background, certifications in product management or related fieldsBusiness, marketing, or management degrees, certifications in product management
Work EnvironmentCollaborates closely with engineering and development teamsWorks across marketing, sales, engineering, and executive teams
Industry UsageCommon in tech companies, software, and hardware industriesWidely used across various industries including tech, retail, and services
Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding technical roles in product developmentUnderstanding overall product management responsibilities

Technical Product professionals focus on the technical aspects of product development, working closely with engineering teams. Product Managers oversee the entire product lifecycle, including strategy, market research, and cross-functional coordination. While both roles collaborate, Technical Product roles are more technically oriented, whereas Product Managers have a broader business and customer focus.

How does a Technical Product Manager typically collaborate with engineering and design teams during product development?

A Technical Product Manager serves as a bridge between engineering, design, and business teams, ensuring that technical feasibility aligns with user needs and business goals. In daily or weekly routines, they facilitate cross-functional meetings, define and prioritize product requirements, and address any technical challenges that arise. They often translate business objectives into actionable tasks for engineers and designers, provide clarifications, and help resolve blockers to keep development on track. Strong collaboration and communication skills are vital, as technical product managers need to balance diverse perspectives and drive consensus among stakeholders.

Job description

Technical Product Owner (AWS Platform & Integrations)

Charlotte, North Carolina (Hybrid โ€“ onsite 3 days a week)

12-month contract (with possible extension)

Pay Range: $60-70hr

Role Overview

Weโ€™re looking for a Technical Product Owner to support a platform and integration team working across multiple business areas. This isnโ€™t a traditional โ€œsingle productโ€ role โ€” youโ€™ll be driving intake, prioritization, and Agile execution across a mix of platform enhancements, integrations, and data initiatives. This is a fast-paced, high-visibility environment where priorities shift, so we need someone who can bring structure, clarity, and strong execution.

What Youโ€™ll Be Doing
  • Own intake and shape incoming work across business and technical teams
  • Manage and prioritize a single consolidated backlog across multiple initiatives
  • Translate ambiguous requests into clear, actionable user stories
  • Partner closely with engineering to ensure work is execution-ready
  • Communicate priorities, trade-offs, and risks to stakeholders
Tech Environment
  • Python / backend services
  • Kafka + event-driven architecture
  • Terraform + CI/CD

You donโ€™t need to be handsโ€‘on, but you should be comfortable operating in this environment.

What Weโ€™re Looking For
  • Experience as a Technical Product Owner, Technical Product Management, or similar role
  • Strong Agile facilitation experience (not just participation)
  • Background working with platform, integration, or data teams
  • Ability to bring structure to ambiguous, fast-moving environments
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Experience in AWS cloud environments
Nice to Have
  • Exposure to data platforms or analytics
  • Experience supporting multiple teams or domains
What Success Looks Like
  • Clear, prioritized backlog aligned to business needs
  • Stakeholders aligned on priorities and trade-offs
