What is a technical product?

Technical Product Managers are professionals who oversee the development, launch, and improvement of technology-driven products. They work at the intersection of engineering, design, and business, translating customer needs into product requirements and collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver solutions. Unlike general product managers, technical product managers typically have a strong technical background, allowing them to communicate effectively with engineering teams and make informed decisions about the technical aspects of the product. Their role often involves prioritizing features, defining the product roadmap, and ensuring that technical solutions align with business goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technical product manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Product Manager, you need a solid understanding of product lifecycle management, technical acumen (often supported by a degree in computer science or engineering), and experience translating business needs into technical requirements. Familiarity with tools like Jira, Agile methodologies, and product analytics platforms, as well as certifications such as Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO), are commonly expected. Strong communication, stakeholder management, and problem-solving abilities help set top performers apart. These skills ensure that products are developed efficiently, meet market demands, and align with business goals.

How does a technical product manager typically collaborate with engineering and design teams during product development?

A Technical Product Manager serves as a bridge between engineering, design, and business teams, ensuring that technical feasibility aligns with user needs and business goals. In daily or weekly routines, they facilitate cross-functional meetings, define and prioritize product requirements, and address any technical challenges that arise. They often translate business objectives into actionable tasks for engineers and designers, provide clarifications, and help resolve blockers to keep development on track. Strong collaboration and communication skills are vital, as technical product managers need to balance diverse perspectives and drive consensus among stakeholders.

Technical Product Manager

Curion LLC

Deerfield, IL • On-site

$90K - $100K/yr

Full-time

Job description

Description:

At Curion, We Connect Brands to People. Our expertise and passionate pursuit of insights enable our clients to make informed decisions that drive meaningful impact. Our vision? Advancing the way brands connect to people to build a better future. Our core values: Integrity, Resiliency, Accountability, Curiosity, and Collaboration.

We are looking for a Technical Product Manager to serve as the bridge between business strategy and engineering execution. This role is critical to translating business objectives into well-scoped technical requirements, ensuring alignment across teams, and keeping product delivery on track.

You will work closely with engineering and business stakeholders to define product direction, prioritize features, and ensure that what gets built delivers measurable value. You need to be technical enough to read code, understand system architecture, and engage in meaningful conversations with engineers but you do not need to write production code. You also need to be strategic enough to understand business problems and translate them into actionable plans the team can execute against.

This is a hands-on role. You will be embedded with the engineering team, involved in sprint planning, scope decisions, and cross-functional coordination. You will join a small, tight-knit development team where your impact will be immediate.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Translate business objectives and user needs into clear, well-scoped technical requirements
  • Partner with engineering to define product roadmaps, prioritize features, and manage the backlog
  • Participate in system design discussions, understanding architectural tradeoffs and their impact on timelines and scope
  • Coordinate cross-functional teams including engineering, design, QA, and business stakeholders to ensure aligned execution
  • Manage project timelines, identify risks early, and proactively address blockers before they impact delivery
  • Decompose problems into actionable components that enable focused, efficient execution
  • Help validate technical feasibility with engineering and inform scope decisions based on constraints and tradeoffs
  • Maintain clear documentation of requirements, decisions, dependencies, and product specifications
  • Communicate product progress, technical updates, and strategic rationale to leadership and stakeholders
  • Contribute to process improvement, helping the team deliver more effectively over time.

Qualifications and Experience

  • 3+ years of experience in product management, technical product management, or a hybrid role spanning strategy and engineering
  • Ability to read and understand code, discuss architecture and system design with engineers, and navigate a codebase when needed
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to build trust and credibility across technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Experience with product management fundamentals including roadmap planning, backlog prioritization, scope management, and cross-functional coordination
  • Comfort working in a collaborative team environment where initiative and problem-solving are expected
  • Own the product documentation system for platform capabilities, workflows, integrations, and data flows, in partnership with engineering.
  • Coordinate product and technical evidence for customer due diligence, security assessments, and applicable compliance reviews. Ensure documentation is current and audit-ready while.
  • Managing system and data documentation for rigorous client audits, ISO 27001, GDPR, or similar regulatory frameworks.
  • Experience working directly with engineering teams on complex technical products
  • Familiarity with generative AI capabilities, Human-in-the-loop workflows and practical applications in a product context
  • Proven ability to work autonomously across US time zones with strong written communication and documentation habits
  • Experience with modern development tools, frameworks, and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, etc.)
  • Track record of taking features from concept through delivery in a product-led organization
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to use data to inform product decisions
  • Working in lean environments where you must be self-directed and comfortable wearing multiple hats

For Curion’s Technical Product Manager position, we offer a starting salary pay range of $90,000-$100,000 plus bonus eligibility based on the qualifications and experience of each individual. Curion offers a benefits package for this position which includes:

  • 401(k) retirement account with company match
  • Health, dental, vision, basic life, short and long-term disability, accident insurance, critical insurance, pet insurance, and more.
  • Paid time off (PTO)
  • Company paid holidays

Curion is committed to equal opportunity in the terms and conditions of employment for all employees and job applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age, gender identity or gender expression, national origin, disability or veteran status.
