What is a technical linguist?

A Technical Linguist is a professional who applies linguistic knowledge and methods to technology-related fields, such as natural language processing, speech recognition, machine translation, and language data analysis. They work closely with engineers and developers to improve language-based technologies, ensuring that language models and systems are accurate, effective, and culturally appropriate. Technical Linguists may also create linguistic resources, annotate data, and contribute to designing algorithms that process human language. Their expertise bridges the gap between human language and computational systems.

How does a technical linguist typically collaborate with software engineers during product development?

Technical Linguists frequently work alongside software engineers to ensure that language data is accurately integrated into products such as speech recognition systems, chatbots, or translation tools. This collaboration often includes providing linguistic expertise, curating language datasets, and troubleshooting language-specific issues that arise during development. Effective communication and a willingness to translate linguistic requirements into actionable technical tasks are key, as Technical Linguists help bridge the gap between language science and engineering implementation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technical linguist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Linguist, you need expertise in linguistics, computational linguistics, and at least one programming language, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with natural language processing (NLP) tools, annotation software, and linguistic data analysis platforms is typically required. Outstanding analytical thinking, attention to detail, and strong cross-functional communication skills set exceptional technical linguists apart. These skills are crucial for developing, refining, and deploying language technologies that meet both technical and user needs.

What is the difference between Technical Linguist vs Language Specialist?

Work EnvironmentGovernment agencies, defense, tech companiesEducational institutions, translation agencies

  • Bachelor's degree with 8 - 12 years of relevant experience OR Master's degree with 6-10 years of related experience. (Additional years of experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.)
  • Candidates must have experience in the Intelligence Community and Operations.
  • Must successfully complete a Leidos-administered language proficiency test or equivalent
  • HLT experience
