What is a technical intern?

Technical interns are students or recent graduates who work temporarily in an organization to gain practical experience in technical fields such as engineering, computer science, or information technology. They typically assist with projects, perform research, write code, or help solve technical problems under the supervision of experienced professionals. Internships are designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world application, helping interns develop valuable skills and build professional networks.

What types of projects can a technical intern expect to work on, and how are tasks typically assigned?

As a Technical Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of projects ranging from assisting in software development to troubleshooting technical issues or supporting research initiatives. Tasks are often assigned based on your skill set and learning goals, and you'll usually work alongside experienced engineers or developers in a collaborative team environment. Interns commonly participate in code reviews, testing, and documentation, gaining hands-on experience and feedback from mentors. This exposure helps you build practical skills and better understand the workflows within a technical team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technical intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Intern, you need a solid understanding of foundational programming concepts, analytical skills, and often ongoing education in a relevant STEM field. Familiarity with software development tools, version control systems like Git, and sometimes specific programming languages or platforms is typically expected. Strong communication, eagerness to learn, and problem-solving ability help set interns apart and make them valuable contributors. These skills and qualities are crucial for adapting quickly, supporting team goals, and gaining meaningful experience in a fast-paced technical environment.

We've grown over 440% in the last 18 months because we take ownership, solve hard problems, and build with purpose. Join us to build the future.
Internship Overview
An internship at Accelevation is not a summer of shadowing and busy work. We design, manufacture, and install the critical infrastructure that powers some of the world's most advanced technologies. As an intern, you will work alongside industry experts on meaningful projects with real deadlines, real responsibilities, and real impact. You will collaborate with engineers, manufacturing leaders, and project managers who are solving complex challenges and shaping the future of critical infrastructure. From our manufacturing center in Southwest Ohio to the mission-critical environments behind many of the world's largest data centers, you will gain firsthand exposure to how innovative ideas become reality. More importantly, you will build lasting connections. You will join a cohort of interns who learn and grow together, while developing relationships with mentors who will support your career long after your internship ends. You will leave with more than experience. You will leave with new skills, meaningful relationships, and a deeper understanding of how your work can help build the future.
Your Impact
As a Manufacturing Engineering Intern, you will support manufacturing engineering activities by assisting with process documentation, production support, ERP configuration, tooling concepts, and continuous improvement initiatives.
This role is designed to provide hands-on experience that connects engineering design, manufacturing execution, and daily production operations. You will work closely with Manufacturing, Production, Planning, Quality, Maintenance, and Engineering teams to document manufacturing methods, improve production documentation, support Epicor infrastructure, generate production-ready drawings, and contribute to practical solutions that enhance operational performance.
Your Day-to-Day Responsibilities
  • Support manufacturing engineering projects by learning assigned production areas and developing an understanding of equipment, personnel, workflows, and manufacturing processes
  • Observe production operations and identify opportunities for process improvements and operational efficiencies
  • Assist with documenting manufacturing methods and reviewing production documentation for accuracy and completeness
  • Help ensure work instructions, engineering drawings, and production-related documentation remain current and usable
  • Support Epicor ERP infrastructure by creating, reviewing, and updating parts, part revisions, jobs, orders, BOM materials, and production operations
  • Utilize CAD and technical drafting skills to create and update production-ready drawings and manufacturing documentation
  • Support tooling and jig improvement projects by gathering operator feedback and assisting with solution development and implementation
  • Collaborate with frontline operators, production leaders, planners, maintenance personnel, quality teams, and engineers to resolve day-to-day manufacturing challenges
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, quality, productivity, and efficiency
  • Present project accomplishments, ERP contributions, tooling improvements, and overall business impact to operations leadership at the conclusion of the internship

Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program in Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or another related technical field
  • Completion of at least two years of undergraduate study preferred
  • Basic knowledge of manufacturing, engineering, or technical processes through coursework, projects, or related experience
  • Experience using 3D parametric CAD software through academic, project-based, or professional experience preferred
  • Ability to read, interpret, and create technical engineering drawings
  • Basic understanding of manufacturing tolerances and engineering documentation
  • Strong interest in hands-on manufacturing environments and production operations
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to gather information and collaborate across departments
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a strong sense of urgency
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications

Benefits
  • Hands-on manufacturing engineering experience
  • Exposure to production operations, ERP systems, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • One-on-one mentorship from engineering and operations leaders
  • Executive networking and professional development opportunities
  • Collaborative, high-energy workplace
  • Opportunity to work on meaningful business projects

Physical Demands and Work Environment
Work is performed in both a climate-controlled engineering office and an active manufacturing environment. Physical requirements include standing and walking on concrete floors for extended periods while observing manufacturing processes, reviewing equipment, and collaborating with operators. The position also requires prolonged periods of computer work for CAD drafting, documentation management, and Epicor-related activities. Employees must be able to inspect equipment, review tooling, bend, reach, and occasionally lift or move items weighing up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
