Technical Designer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technical designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Designer, you need a strong background in design principles, garment construction, and technical specifications, often supported by a degree in fashion design or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, pattern-making tools, and PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) systems is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities ensure accurate product development, clear collaboration between design and production teams, and high-quality finished products.

What is a technical designer?

A technical designer works in the fashion industry to help take a garment from concept to shelf. As a technical designer, it’s your job to take creative designs and adapt these ideas into actual products. Your primary duties include reviewing design work, developing a plan with the manufacturer, and ensuring that the finished product meets the quality standards of your company. You must have knowledge of patterns, fit, and fashion design. As the industry is becoming more modernized, you should also be familiar with the various tech and software tools used in the design process. While this position is most common in fashion apparel, you may find work in other industries as well.

How does a technical designer typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

Technical Designers work closely with various departments, such as product development, engineering, and production teams, to ensure that designs are both creative and technically feasible. They frequently translate creative concepts into detailed technical specifications and often participate in meetings to resolve design challenges or clarify requirements. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as Technical Designers must balance the creative vision with manufacturing constraints and quality standards throughout the project lifecycle.

Job description

American Tall is a thriving e-commerce brand, dedicated to producing world-class quality clothing for tall men, and women, up to 7'1. Founded by a father and son duo in 2015, the business has grown to a level that seemed almost unimaginable just a few years ago and is now a leading brand in the tall community. The growth can be attributed to the excellent leadership team and family values that drive the business - respect, passion, support, and empowerment.

We believe the best ideas come from a diverse group of people. This is a special opportunity to join an innovative business with tremendous upside, and a work culture built on the foundation of respect, inclusiveness, and continued learning.

The Role:

The Apparel Technical Designer will execute the vision, assist in the technical design and line sketching process, and collaborate with product developers, merchandisers, and designers to visualize and conceptualize American Tall collections.  The successful candidate will have a thorough understanding of 3D sketching, print, and pattern creation.

Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Product Understanding & Ideation.  Assist in conceptualizing new collections with the merchandising team under the direction of the Design Director and Merchandising Director.  Research style and trend elements, under the guidance of the Design Director.
  • CAD Creation for New Product Assortments.  Create and update detailed CADs for upcoming collections to ensure accurate communication of design intent, in all colours and print/pattern options.  Update CADS throughout the design and PD journey and represent the current version of the style, amidst modifications and/or style changes.
  • Print, Pattern, and AOP execution.  Create digital prints, patterns, and AOPs under the precise guidance of the design director and merchandising team.
  • Collection Overview Boards (Physical & Digital).  Create, organize, update, and follow-up on style and collection overview boards, both physically and digitally, for internal presentations and team reviews.
  • Other Departmental Collection Documentation.  Create documents or style guides, both physically and digitally, for internal presentations and team reviews, in direct collaboration with the merchandising team.
  • Sample Fittings.   Follow the flow of samples through market fitting to development fitting, all the way to size set fitting, record any changes made to the styles and represent them in our overview boards, both physically and digitally, in direct collaboration with the Technical Development Manager, Design Director, and PD Team.
Experience, Education and Designations
  • College or Bachelor's degree in Fashion Design, Technical Design, or related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in technical design, preferably in a specialty-size market.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign).
Knowledge, Skills and Attributes
  • Strong understanding of garment construction, pattern making, and fit.
  • Experience incorporating AI frameworks or tools into the design process

  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Good attitude and team player
