Job description

MVT Canadian Bus, Inc. proudly operates the Barrie Transit conventional, specialized and on-demand transit service for the City of Barrie from a $22M state of the art facility as part of a 20-year operating contract which commenced in 2015. Position Summary:

The IT Manager is responsible for manage all technology-based systems, hardware and software that are used in the operation of providing fixed route and specialty transit services to the City of Barrie. This includes installing and maintaining hardware, software and networks as well as training, consultation and providing recommendations about future planning and development of technology resources. The IT Manager is expected to provide these services in an effective and efficient manner to ensure maximum access to and implementation of technology services and resources.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities:

The following is not intended to be a comprehensive list of the essential functions of the IT Manager position, but rather a general description of some of the requirements necessary to carry out the duties and responsibilities of this position. The IT Manager must be able to perform the following tasks, among others:

  • Technical point of contact for Company, the Client and outside vendors of hardware or software for all communication and data processing systems that are currently in service or that need to be in the Barrie Transit garage facility
  • Provides general day-to-day user support for desktop, phone, voicemail questions and problems at user’s locations
  • Responsible for the installation, configuration and regular monitoring and update patching of the following major systems and their components:

Systems – Server & Client Infrastructure:

  • VMware Vsphere v6 server virtualization running hosts (4) and virtual machines (15)
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 virtual machine operating systems (12)
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (1) & 2012 (1)
  • Microsoft Active Directory includes all servers, client pcs, users and security groups
  • VMware Virtual Data Protection backup appliance
  • QNAP 16Terrabyte network storage drive for shared network storage (S: drive)
  • Networked client desktops (16), laptops (13) and maintenance laptops (4)
  • Networked & standalone multi-function printer/copier/scanners (6)

Systems – Data & Voice Infrastructure:

  • CISCO Meraki firewall (1), switches (5) and wireless access points (10)
  • Bell Canada 10Mb fiber and backup ADSL data circuits
  • Digium Switchvox IP digital phone system with sets (30), voicemail & call routing
  • Bell Canada digital (31) and analog (18) voice circuits
  • Bell ExpressVu satellite TV (3)
  • PC to TV adapters in meeting rooms

Systems – Security Infrastructure:

  • CHUBB Director building access card and security system
  • IndigoVision Video Surveillance with 48 cameras and 2 network video recorders
  • Digital gate/entrance intercoms and paging system

Systems – Applications & In-Vehicle systems:

  • STREETS fixed route AVL & Scheduling, plus in-vehicle related equipment (RANGERS)
  • “myridebarrie.ca” web service
  • STREETS reporting
  • PASS specialized AVL and Scheduling, plus in-vehicle related equipment (RANGERS)
  • PASS Interactive Voice Recognition server & associated hardware
  • CMMS issue & request/work order system
  • ProFuel Diesel fuel pump transaction system
  • Microsoft RemoteAPP server for access to internal applications
  • DriveCAM server and in-vehicle Wi-Fi recorders
  • SEON onboard video surveillance
  • Farebox wireless connectivity to the City of Barrie network.
  • Dispatch digital radio console
  • Digital Signage in Drivers room
  • Meraki client VPN & firewall port access for user and system external access
    • Assists with the installation, configuration, and maintenance of workstations, applications, telecommunication equipment, file servers, Ethernet networks, network cabling, and other related equipment or software
    • Provide and/or facilitate training and support to Company and Client employees for the use of these systems to perform their roles in operating the Barrie Transit system
    • Resides as the expert in Information Technology issues
    • Maintains databases, structures and resources
    • Provides timely, consistent and quality customer service with support on IT related issues
    • Provides regular desktop support to users
    • Performs web-based application, installation and
    • Assists with the performance of network security, including adding and deleting users, performing routine backup data, managing host security, file permissions, and file system integrity
    • Troubleshoots applications to identify and correct malfunctions and other operational difficulties
    • Communicates to the client, client support, and MV support any malfunctions and other operational difficulties
    • Instruct system users on operating systems, and other applications
    • Plans, organizes, directs, controls and evaluates the operations of information systems
    • Develops, implements and updates policies and procedures for electronic data processing and computer systems operations and development
    • Meets and communicates with the client, client technical support, and managers to discuss system requirements, specifications, costs and timelines
    • Controls the computer systems budgets and expenditures
    • Troubleshoots hardware, software and network operating system
    • Monitors security of all technology
    • Advises staff of security breaches and/or changes in password or security status
    • Ensures installation of lock out programs
    • Identifies and prepares hardware for disposal when appropriate, while ensuring hardware is stripped and secured before disposal
    • Maintains current and accurate inventory of technology hardware, software and resources
    • Provides network accounts and passwords as required
    • All other duties as assigned
Working Conditions:

The IT Manager works primarily in an office environment with regular visits to field locations. The IT Manager may be called upon after hours from time-to-time by managers, in an emergency, or other reasons as required. The job requires the following physical activities: sitting, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, loading and unloading, typing, filing, answering phones.


Qualifications:
  • Five (5) years of management experience in IT systems and support
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience managing in a unionized environment
  • Cost control or financial/budgeting experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent knowledge in Information Technology
  • Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) or Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)
  • Experience utilizing Trapeze software preferred
  • Be able to pass and maintain a clear Criminal Background Check
  • May be required to qualify as a Joint Health and Safety Committee certified management member

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with an ability to influence people at all levels of the organization
