The main difference between a Tech Director and a Software Development Manager lies in scope and focus. A Tech Director oversees the entire technology strategy and infrastructure, while a Software Development Manager concentrates on managing software projects and teams. Both roles require technical expertise and leadership skills, but the Tech Director's role is broader and more strategic.

How does a Tech Director typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

A Tech Director regularly works with cross-functional teams, including product management, design, and operations, to ensure that technical solutions align with business objectives. They facilitate communication between developers and non-technical stakeholders, translating complex technical concepts into actionable business strategies. This role often involves leading technical reviews, setting project priorities, and supporting interdepartmental initiatives to drive innovation and efficiency across the organization.

What is a Tech Director?

A Tech Director, short for Technical Director, is a senior-level professional responsible for overseeing the technical aspects of a company or specific project. They lead technical teams, make high-level decisions about technology infrastructure, and ensure that technical solutions align with business goals. Tech Directors often collaborate with other departments, manage budgets, and stay up-to-date with emerging technologies to keep their organization competitive. Their role can vary by industry, but it generally involves a combination of leadership, strategic planning, and hands-on technical expertise.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Tech Director, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tech Director, you need a robust background in software development, IT infrastructure, and project management, often supported by a relevant degree and leadership experience. Familiarity with systems architecture, cloud platforms, agile methodologies, and certifications such as PMP or AWS Certified Solutions Architect are typically valued. Strong communication, problem-solving, and strategic thinking skills help you lead diverse technical teams and align technology with business goals. These skills and qualities ensure effective oversight of technology initiatives and drive innovation within the organization.

Job description

Description

Born from the legacy of the 1988 Winter Olympic Games, WinSport is more than a place โ€” it is a spirit that ignites potential. As a not-for-profit organization and the proud owner and operator of Canada Olympic Park, WinSport provides inclusive opportunities for Canadians to discover, develop, and excel at sport and physical activity through world-class training, legendary facilities, and exceptional experiences. Through yearโ€‘round sport, entertainment, recreation, and shared experiences, WinSport brings people together and creates spaces where belonging thrives.

The Director, Information Technology is a key leadership role where you will have the opportunity to shape WinSportโ€™s technology strategy, strengthen infrastructure and cybersecurity, and support the continued modernization of a dynamic, multiโ€‘building campus. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer and serving as the primary IT advisor to the Executive Leadership Team, you will lead a shared service function that supports highโ€‘volume, publicโ€‘facing operations, including more than one million annual guest visits, approximately $35M in annual revenue, and a workforce that scales seasonally from approximately 150 to 800 team members.

This is a pivotal leadership role for a strategic, handsโ€‘on technology leader who understands that reliable, secure, and wellโ€‘integrated systems are essential to exceptional guest, athlete, employee, and event experiences. As a trusted advisor to the CFO and Executive Leadership Team, you will lead the development and execution of a pragmatic IT roadmap, oversee core operational systems, strengthen cybersecurity and risk management practices, and ensure the stability of revenueโ€‘impacting technologies across pointโ€‘ofโ€‘sale, ticketing, RFID access control, food and beverage, lessons and programs, and event operations.

The ideal candidate brings postโ€‘secondary education in Information Technology, Computer Science, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, along with 7+ years of progressive IT experience, including leadership across infrastructure, endโ€‘user services, and business applications in a lean environment. You have experience supporting highโ€‘availability, revenueโ€‘impacting environments such as hospitality, retail, attractions, venues, or eventโ€‘based operations, and bring strong capability in network and endpoint management, cybersecurity fundamentals, vendor and MSP oversight, and executive communication.

Join a leadership team that is building on an Olympic legacy while shaping the future of sport, recreation, and community connection in Calgary. At WinSport, you will help strengthen the systems, tools, and technology foundations that enable safe, seamless, and memorable experiences for guests, athletes, employees, partners, and the broader community.
