What is a tech controller?

Tech Controllers, also known as Technical Controllers, are professionals responsible for overseeing, maintaining, and troubleshooting technical systems and networks within an organization. Their primary duties include ensuring the smooth operation of communication systems, monitoring network performance, and quickly resolving any technical issues that arise. They often work with IT teams to implement new technologies, maintain system security, and optimize technical processes for efficiency. Tech Controllers play a critical role in minimizing downtime and supporting the overall technological infrastructure of a business.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tech controller?

To thrive as a Tech Controller, you need a strong background in financial management, accounting principles, and technology operations, typically supported by a degree in finance, accounting, or information systems. Familiarity with ERP systems, financial reporting software, and data analytics tools is commonly required, along with certifications like CPA or CMA. Exceptional analytical thinking, communication, and leadership skills help in collaborating across technical and finance teams. These skills are essential to ensure accurate financial oversight, effective risk management, and strategic decision-making in tech-driven organizations.

How does a tech controller typically interact with other departments within an organization?

A Tech Controller often collaborates closely with IT, finance, and operations teams to ensure the organization's technology assets are managed efficiently. They serve as a bridge between technical staff and financial decision-makers, translating complex technical requirements into budgetary terms and ensuring compliance with financial controls. Regular meetings with department heads and project managers are common, as Tech Controllers help align technology initiatives with overall business goals and monitor project expenditures.

Job description

Fractional Controller - Ascent CFO Solutions

What if your next role gave you real ownership of the accounting function, without being tied to one company full-time and flexibility to manage your own hours and schedule?

Ascent CFO Solutions is expanding our team of fractional Controllers: experienced accounting leaders who partner with startups, scale-ups, and PE-/VC-backed companies to build and run the financial infrastructure that lets them grow. You'll step into a portfolio of clients as a hands-on leader, doing the meaningful accounting work that keeps a company's books accurate, its close on time, and its leadership team informed.

The Role

As a Fractional Controller, you're not just closing the books, you're the person clients rely on to get the accounting function right. You'll tailor your approach to what each client actually needs, from cleaning up a messy general ledger to building out reporting a growing company can trust.

Your day-to-day will focus on:

  • Accounting Operations: Overseeing general ledger setup, account control, journal entries, and monthly close and reporting.
  • Reporting & Insight: Producing financial reporting packages, including dashboards and KPI reporting that leadership actually uses.
  • Payroll & Cash Management: Overseeing payroll processes, bank reconciliations, cash management, and intercompany accounts.
  • Audit & Compliance: Managing year-end audit engagements, researching and implementing new accounting pronouncements, and preparing debt compliance and bank reporting.
  • Consolidations: Preparing periodic consolidated financial statements, including all eliminating entries.

What You Bring to the Team

We're looking for experienced accounting professionals who can walk into a client's books, get organized fast, and run a clean, accurate close every time.

  • Track Record: 12+ years in Finance/Accounting, including at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Technical Strength: Strong understanding of GAAP and hands-on experience managing the full accounting cycle.
  • Industry Range: Experience across a range of industries - Technology, SaaS, Professional Services, Construction, Manufacturing, eCommerce, Healthcare, CPG, FinTech, Real Estate, and more.
  • Growth-Stage Experience: Proven experience with fast-growth companies, from early stage up to $50M+ in revenue.
  • Systems Fluency: Proficient with QBO and ERP systems (NetSuite, etc.), payroll/expense/bill pay systems (Gusto and similar), and advanced Excel.
  • Credentials: Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or Business Administration. CPA preferred.
  • Location: Must live in Colorado, Arizona, or Florida. This a remote role with some in-person meetings as needed & team events.

Why Ascent CFO Solutions?

We're a 15-year firm built specifically around fractional finance work, not a gig platform.

  • True Flexibility: Manage a portfolio of clients on a schedule that works for you.
  • A Built-in Pipeline: We bring the clients to you, backed by a team of CFOs, Controllers, and Accountants supporting your engagements.
  • A Real Community: Work alongside a network of finance professionals who share knowledge and solve problems together.
  • Recognized Growth: We're a 3x Inc. 5000 honoree and a Built In Best Places to Work winner.

Comp & Benefits

Ascent offers the stability of a W2 position with competitive benefits, not a 1099 consulting arrangement.

  • Compensation: $75–90/hour+, based on experience.
  • Health Coverage: Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance for employees averaging 25+ hours/week.
  • Retirement: 401(k) with company match.
  • Time Off: Paid sick time, holiday time, and volunteer time.
  • Culture: A collaborative remote environment with occasional, optional in-person team building.

Equal Opportunity Employer

Ascent CFO Solutions is proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer. We're committed to a diverse, inclusive, and equitable environment for everyone on our team.
