What is a Tech Account Manager?

A Tech Account Manager is a professional who serves as the primary point of contact between a technology company and its clients. They are responsible for managing customer relationships, understanding clients' technical needs, and ensuring the successful delivery of products or services. Tech Account Managers work closely with sales, support, and technical teams to address issues, offer solutions, and help clients achieve their business goals. Their role is key in maintaining customer satisfaction and driving account growth.

How does a Tech Account Manager typically collaborate with technical and non-technical teams within an organization?

Tech Account Managers act as a crucial bridge between clients, sales teams, and technical departments. They work closely with engineering or product teams to communicate client requirements, ensure technical solutions align with customer needs, and troubleshoot issues efficiently. Simultaneously, they collaborate with sales, marketing, and customer success teams to strategize on account growth and retention. Effective communication and the ability to translate technical jargon into business value are essential in fostering successful cross-functional relationships.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Tech Account Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tech Account Manager, you need a solid understanding of technology solutions, account management experience, and typically a bachelor’s degree in business, IT, or a related field. Familiarity with CRM platforms like Salesforce, technical support tools, and sometimes certifications such as ITIL or relevant vendor credentials are highly valued. Excellent communication, relationship-building, and problem-solving skills help you manage client expectations and collaborate with internal teams. These abilities are crucial for delivering client satisfaction, driving account growth, and ensuring successful adoption of technical solutions.

Job description

ProTech, a New Charter company, is a respected Managed Service Provider delivering innovative IT solutions - including managed IT services, cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity, and technology consulting - to businesses across the greater New York metropolitan area.
We are seeking a results-driven Account Manager (also may be referred to as Technical Account Manager, Account Management, or Client Relationship Manager) to join our sales team. This hybrid role blends new business development with strategic account management, making it ideal for a consultative professional who thrives on building long-term client relationships and solving real-world business challenges through technology. You will serve as a trusted advisor to both prospects and existing clients, helping them align their technology investments with their business goals.
This role manages client accounts across our Torrington and White Plains offices, working with a diverse, multi-location client base.

Key Responsibilities:

Business Development

  • Actively prospect for new business through cold outreach, networking, referrals, and marketing campaigns
  • Identify leads and new client opportunities across assigned territories
  • Schedule and conduct First-Time Appointments (FTAs) in collaboration with the Director of Sales
  • Identify client pain points and align their needs with ProTech's managed IT, cloud, and cybersecurity solutions
  • Conduct discovery meetings and develop long-term technology roadmaps for prospective clients
  • Represent ProTech at local events, trade shows, and industry forums to build brand presence and pipeline

Account Management

  • Serve as the primary relationship owner for an assigned book of accounts, managing multiple clients across the Torrington and White Plains offices
  • Lead quarterly business reviews (QBRs) and guide clients through long-term IT planning and strategy, including onboarding for some newer client accounts
  • Manage renewals for hardware, software, licensing, and service contracts
  • Act as the liaison between clients and ProTech's technical services team to ensure seamless delivery
  • Handle client escalations professionally, driving timely resolution and maintaining high satisfaction
  • Identify expansion and upsell opportunities across assigned accounts, aligned with client growth

Internal Collaboration

  • Maintain accurate CRM records including pipeline updates, activity logs, and forecast data
  • Partner with vendors and distribution contacts to prepare competitive solution proposals and quotes
  • Collaborate with the sales team within a POD structure, supporting shared goals and peer development
  • Participate in new client onboarding and kickoff meetings to ensure a strong start to each engagement
  • Stay current on ProTech's service portfolio, emerging technologies, market trends, and competitor offerings

What We're Looking For

  • 2+ years of experience in account management, business development, or outside sales - preferably in IT, MSP, or B2B technology services
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple client relationships and close new business in a consultative sales environment
  • Comfortable engaging and presenting to C-level executives and business decision-makers
  • Working knowledge of IT concepts including managed services, cloud solutions, and cybersecurity (training provided)
  • Proficiency with CRM platforms and quoting tools; experience with Microsoft 365 a plus
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to tailor messaging to diverse audiences
  • Highly organized self-starter with the ability to manage multiple priorities and operate with minimal supervision
  • Collaborative team player with a client-first mindset and a commitment to professional integrity
  • Bachelor's degree preferred; equivalent combination of education and experience considered

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive base salary starting at $65,000
  • Commission incentive structure covering both new business development and growth within existing accounts
  • Comprehensive healthcare benefits
  • Retirement plan with employer match
  • Ongoing professional development and vendor training opportunities
  • Collaborative, team-oriented culture with room for growth
