Job description

Job Responsibilities The Culinary Institute of Charleston is seeking a Part-Time Relish Cafe Teaching Assistant to support student learning and daily cafe operations. This position provides hands-on instruction and guidance to students while assisting with the operation of the Relish Cafe, including customer service, point-of-sale transactions, product handling, and inventory support. The successful candidate will help create a positive learning environment, reinforce industry best practices, and support instructional activities that prepare students for careers in hospitality and food service.

Key Responsibilities: Assist in the operation of a fully functioning instructional cafe. Train and mentor students in cafe service and customer service practices. Operate and assist students with Point of Sale (POS) systems.

Support bakeshop product packaging, pricing, storage, and distribution. Provide constructive feedback to promote student learning and success. Maintain a welcoming environment for guests, students, faculty, and staff.

Help maintain food safety, sanitation, and workplace safety standards. Collaborate with faculty and department leadership to support quality and continuous improvement. Assist with inventory receiving and storage activities as needed.

Perform other related duties in support of departmental operations. Minimum and Additional Requirements High school diploma or equivalent. Experience in cafe, restaurant, or service-related operations.

Current students and graduates of the Culinary Institute of Charleston, as well as individuals who have completed a dining room class in another program, are encouraged to apply. Basic understanding of food safety, storage, and sanitation practices. Strong customer service, communication, and organizational skills.

Ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Ability to lift and move materials weighing up to 30 pounds. Preferred Qualifications Associate degree in Culinary Arts, Hospitality Management, Business, Logistics, or a related field.

Experience teaching, training, or mentoring others. Experience in culinary, hospitality, educational, or food service environments. Experience using POS software systems.

Part-time employees may work up to 30 hours per week during the spring and fall semesters. Typical schedules may include: Monday through Thursday during portions of the semester, 4- to 5-hour shifts Tuesday and Thursday during portions of the semester, 4- to 5-hour shifts Typical workday: 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m

Candidates must have flexibility to work morning and afternoon hours as needed to support instructional cafe operations, inventory activities, and special events.
