Description

Provides flexible building-based support across multiple students, classrooms, and settings to assist with implementation of academic, behavioral, social-emotional, executive functioning, and independence supports identified through IEPs, 504 plans, MTSS interventions, and building-level student support systems.
  • Provide flexible support across assigned students and educational settings based on changing student, classroom, and building needs as directed by administrators and case managers.
  • Support implementation of behavior, academic, executive functioning, social-emotional, and independence strategies identified through IEPs, 504 plans, BIPs, Tier II interventions, and other student support plans.
  • Assist students in accessing instruction, classroom routines, transitions, inclusion opportunities, and participation within general education and specialized settings.
  • Provide intermittent personal care, mobility assistance, delegated health tasks, and adaptive support as trained and assigned.
  • Support student independence, self-regulation, engagement, and skill generalization across settings and staff.
  • Monitor, collect, and document student(s) data as directed to assist teams in monitoring effectiveness of supports and adjusting interventions.
  • Utilize Assistive Technology, adaptive supports, and behavior support strategies as trained.
  • Collaborate with administrators, case managers, counselors, teachers, and related service providers to adjust support based on student and building needs.
  • Complete required CPI, de-escalation, and assigned safety training.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and physical ability to move between settings and provide physical assistance, lifting, or toileting support as required across assigned students.

SALARY: LEVEL 35 on the Paraeducator (formerly Instructional Assistant) Salary Schedule. Experience increments depend on experience in the same or similar permanent position within a Washington State public school or another state's public school.
Responsibilities
  1. Provide instruction in core academic areas designed by the teachers/specialists. Assist the special education teacher/general education teacher in the implementation of the student Individual Education Plan, including student accommodations and modifications. Assist the teacher in preparing materials and collecting and recording data.
  2. Participate as a contributing member of a collaborative team. Assist the teacher in implementing behavioral and social skills programs as designed and supervised by certificated staff. Under the supervision of certificated staff, implement the district de-escalation and soft-restraint techniques as needed.
  3. Assist students with physical and mobility needs and personal care. Assist secondary students with pre-vocational and transition activities. Manage student equipment and assistive technology as needed. Supervise and promote safety of students in multiple settings. Administer, monitor, and document medication following the District policy/procedures and student health care plan, as needed.

Qualifications
  1. Must provide high school diploma (or equivalent) AND 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits from an accredited college, AA or BA degree, OR pass an academically rigorous assessment.
  2. Demonstrated ability and aptitude to perform the responsibilities listed.
  3. Must complete Core Competencies within one year if hired into a Paraeducator position (refer to the ESS Collective Bargaining Agreement).
  4. Demonstrated interest in working with students with a broad range of disabilities.
  5. One year of successful work experience, training, or school district experience with students or adults with disabilities preferred.
  6. Ability to respond appropriately to aggressive and physical behaviors.
  7. Have successfully completed or be willing to complete the District de-escalation/soft restraint training. Must demonstrate initial competency level as measured by instructor observation.
  8. Willing and physically capable of kneeling, bending, and working or sitting on the floor with students; running after students, based on student needs.
  9. Provide personal care assistance to students including, but not limited to, feeding, tube feeding (with training), toileting and diapering, based on student needs. Must pass the District strength and agility screening test, when necessary and based on student needs.
  10. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Heavier lifting will utilize a two-person lift or assistive devices.
  11. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse group of students, teachers, parents, and administrators in a positive, professional, and confidential manner.
  12. Relates positively to youth and adults of varying socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
  13. Demonstrated ability to follow directions, carry out routines, and implement interventions as directed by certificated staff or supervisors.
  14. Basic computer skills required.
  15. Proficiency in basic communication skills and ability to see, hear, and listen to the teacher and students throughout the classroom or school settings in order to supervise and maintain a safe environment for a diverse group of students.
  16. Must have access to reliable transportation.

Employees can choose from a lifetime retirement pension plan or a hybrid pension and investment plan that contributes between 5% and 15% of wages to retirement. When employees meet plan requirements and retire, they are guaranteed a monthly benefit for the rest of their life from the employer-funded pension.
      • Employees can also participate in voluntary savings programs to increase retirement savings such as the DRS Deferred Compensation Program or by participating in a 403(b) retirement plan through the District's plan manager, OMNI.
