About the Master of Arts in Teaching (BFA-MAT) program
Nationally recognized for its successful approach to preparing art education professionals, MICA's Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program is founded on the belief that teaching is an art in itself-and that the best art teachers are practicing, accomplished artists. In the MAT program, teacher candidates develop mastery as artists and teachers simultaneously through intensive study in learning theory, strategies for teaching, child-adolescent development, and independent studio investigations. Through this process, teacher candidates successfully integrate personal artistry with the skill and understanding to direct the art making of others. The program includes a comprehensive, studio based, learner-centered, context sensitive approach to the teaching of art.
Through immersive experiences in PreK-12 art classrooms across Baltimore and neighboring districts, teacher candidates synthesize experiences in artmaking, teaching, and research in order to take informed and responsible action that supports learners' varied needs. Teacher candidates learn to develop and sequence instruction through innovative curriculum design grounded in their expertise as artists, teachers, and researchers, and with careful consideration of the needs and interests of their learners. By the program's end, teacher candidates will have explored educational theories and practices, shaping their beliefs on effective art instruction, reflected in their teaching philosophies and practice. With a 100% placement rate over many years, our graduates distinguish themselves as artists, educators, and leaders as advocates and agents of change - throughout the U.S. and beyond.
About Graduate Studies
Graduate Studies at MICA brings together a vibrant community of more than two-hundred graduate students pursuing degrees across more than a dozen graduate programs - encompassing art, design, education, community and research. Part of a dynamic network of specialized programs, each of these graduate programs creates a distinct learning environment for students in order to advance their practices and contribute to the discourse of their respective fields. At the same time, Graduate Studies provides opportunities for graduate students to engage in interdisciplinary dialogue through shared coursework, exhibitions, workshops, lectures, events, and activities.
