Job description

Tax Analyst II: Prepare or assist in filing of federal and state income tax returns, monthly and year-end income tax accruals, tax exhibits for regulatory filings, and related tasks.
Tax Analyst III: Prepare or assist in filing of federal and state tax returns, related monthly and year-end tax accruals, tax exhibits for regulatory filings, and related tasks. Provide guidance, training and review to less experienced tax personnel.
Tax Analyst IV: Research and analyze income tax laws, provide technical assistance on complex income tax accounting issues, prepare or assist in filing of federal and state income tax returns, assist in coordinating income tax audits, tax planning and M&A activities, and related tasks. Provide guidance, training and review to less experienced tax personnel.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Tax Analyst II: ($63,860 - $79,830)
  • Bachelor's Degree with a major in accounting, finance or related field; and
  • Two years of experience in public utility accounting or appropriate public accounting, taxation field or other related work experience.

Tax Analyst III: ($73,460 - $91,830)
  • Bachelor's Degree with a major in accounting, finance or related field; and
  • Four years of experience in public utility accounting or appropriate public accounting, taxation field.

Tax Analyst IV: ($84,460 - $105,570)
  • Bachelor's Degree with a major in accounting, finance or related field; and
  • Six years of experience in public utility accounting, or appropriate public accounting, taxation field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • CPA or professional certification desired.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Must take all measures necessary to protect networks, devices, programs and data from cyber-attack, damage or unauthorized access.
  • May be required to maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States, no sponsorships considered.
  • Subject to pre-employment drug testing and background checks.
  • This position is located in Bismarck, ND but may consider a remote location in the United States where MDU Resources is authorized to do business.
  • Remote candidates may be required to travel to the Corporate Headquarters based on department needs.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Analyze and develop spreadsheets enhancements for all tax returns and supporting schedules, and all tax accruals and related workpapers.
  • Actively participate in the review of tax department policies and tax procedures to ensure compliance with company policies and GAAP and SOX internal controls.
  • Research and answer tax-related questions from internal customers.
  • Assist in the preparation and filing of the consolidated federal and multistate income tax returns for MDU Resources and its subsidiaries.
  • Assist in the calculation of quarterly income tax estimates in accordance with IRS guidance.
  • Performs other tasks and special projects as assigned.

Additional to above, the Tax Analyst III:
  • Provide regular guidance, training and review of tax work of less experienced analysts.
  • Respond to various tax notices.
  • Proactively identify, drive, and implement process improvements that promote risk management, streamline activities, and enhance transparency in tax work streams.

Additional to above, the Tax Analyst IV:
  • Research, analyze and evaluate tax laws, regulations, rulings and court decisions as required relating to all tax matters with respect to MDU Resources and its subsidiaries and recommend procedures to minimize corporate taxes consistent with lawful compliance.
  • Coordinate audits by federal, state and local tax authorities and provide periodic progress reports to management.
  • Assist the Regulatory Affairs Department preparing rate case filings with the preparation of tax rate case schedules and responses to tax data requests.
  • Provide tax support to all operating companies of MDU.
