Job description

TARC will be launching the New TARC Network next summer and we want you to be a part of it!

The New TARC Network will mark a new chapter in TARC history and will allow the agency to provide better, more reliable service on major corridors across the City. TARC is looking for transit professionals who want to help us deliver high-quality bus service to the Louisville community.


GENERAL SUMMARY:

Determines nature of repair(s) needed. Performs repairs to engine and parts not performed by another department. This position will support a safety and customer service culture through programs, procedures, and other related work to achieve TARC’s mission and strategic outcomes. The position is responsible for meeting or exceeding all TARC policies and procedures with strict adherence to all local, state, and federal regulations; and performing related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

None


COMPENSATION:
  • Starting pay: $30.46/hour
  • Earn up to an additional $8/hour with ASE certifications
  • Highly technical positions: Additional $1/hour

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Plans work using experience, charts, and/or manuals
  • Performs “road calls” with company truck; brings tools tray. May have the assistance of another mechanic
  • Makes road repairs if able, or brings the coach back to the garage and arranges for another coach by radio
  • Repairs or replaces parts in transmission, adjusts brakes, treadle valves using mechanics hand tools and lubricating grease
  • Completes report of trouble call(s)
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Raises coach on hydraulic lift at suitable height for the individual
  • Removes back seat to access Jefferson door if required
  • Changes tires if required
  • May train new employees or advise others, depending upon experience
  • May clean shop if required
  • Cleans parts using Safety Clean parts basin
  • Performs other duties as assigned
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Minimum of three (3) years diesel, or five (5) years automotive mechanic verifiable work experience.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Kentucky or Indiana Commercial Class B Driver's License with a passenger and air brakes endorsements within 60 days of hire.
  • CDL Permit must be obtained prior to date of hire
  • Successful performance on pre-employment tests.

Note: An equivalent combination of related education and experience may be substituted for the above stated minimums excluding High School Diploma, GED, Licenses, or Certifications.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Must be able to successfully pass a DOT Physical including bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing, or crouching.
  • Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, using appropriate English grammar and syntax.
  • Ability to safety and properly operate a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to user computerized diagnostic equipment.
  • Must have the ability to safely and properly operate a coach or other vehicle.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Incumbents generally work in a noisy environment with adequate light and temperature. There may be occasional exposure to extreme temperatures, loud noise, fumes, odors, dust, mist, gases, and poor ventilation; must be able to lift up to 75 lbs. Work will require mobility including lifting or moving materials.
