What is a tandem developer?

A Tandem Developer is a software engineer who specializes in developing, maintaining, and optimizing applications on Tandem (HP NonStop) systems. These fault-tolerant systems are commonly used in banking, finance, and telecommunications industries. Tandem Developers work with languages like COBOL, TAL, C, and SQL to build and support high-availability transaction processing applications. They also ensure system reliability, performance, and security while integrating with other enterprise technologies.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a tandem developer?

A typical day for a Tandem Developer involves maintaining and enhancing mission-critical applications on HP NonStop systems, writing and debugging code, and troubleshooting production issues to ensure system stability. You may also participate in designing new features, integrating Tandem applications with other enterprise platforms, and performing regular system testing. Collaboration with business analysts, QA teams, and system administrators is common to ensure that all changes align with business requirements and maintain regulatory compliance. Tandem Developers often work in industries like banking, payments, and retail, making their contributions vital to the up-time and security of transaction processing systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tandem developer?

A Tandem Developer requires in-depth knowledge of Tandem (HP NonStop) systems, proficiency in programming languages such as TAL, COBOL, or C, and strong problem-solving abilities. Familiarity with Guardian OS, Enscribe/Enform databases, Pathway/TS, and system integration tools, as well as experience with payment or transaction processing, are highly valued; relevant industry certifications are a plus. Excellent analytical thinking, teamwork, and communication skills help Tandem Developers collaborate across departments and address technical issues efficiently. These competencies are crucial for maintaining the reliability, security, and performance of business-critical applications running on Tandem systems.
