Job description

Location:
Houston, Hybrid
Summary:
At Tally Group, we put our energy into building world-leading utility technology. We want to transform how people power their homes and businesses, so we're reinventing how energy retailers operate.
We are a cloud-native SaaS provider with extensive experience and clients worldwide. We offer a comprehensive suite of innovative billing, digital and analytics solutions designed to meet globally diverse market and regulatory requirements, empower customers and reduce cost-to-serve.
Why Tally Group?
  • A flat, non-hierarchical culture with direct visibility to senior leadership and executives
  • Investment in career growth and mentorship - team members are actively supported in growing into new roles and responsibilities
  • A stable, essential industry doing work with real impact, supporting the transition to renewable and more efficient energy solutions
  • Active, funded growth in the US market - Tally has recently brought on a dedicated Chief Growth Officer and US sales team
  • A small, tight-knit, globally distributed team that enjoys working together

Role Description
As our new Developer, you'll work with our close-knit Agile team to support and implement changes to our billing software. This is a full lifecycle development role, not a reporting, ETL, or database administration position - you'll work primarily in SQL Server (the majority of the role), with APIs and application-level components (C#/.NET) rounding it out, and the ability to reverse-engineer and confidently modify existing code is central to the role. In addition to maintenance and support tasks for the client, you'll be involved in all aspects of Agile software development including planning, designing, building, testing, releasing and feedback.
Responsibilities:
Delivery
  • Plan, prioritize and transparently manage workload and commitments.
  • Contribute to backlog refinement, estimation and sprint planning activities.
  • Estimate the size and complexity of backlog items.
  • Translation of backlog items into logical units of work (tasks)
  • Proactively communicate progress, risks, dependencies and blockers.
  • Deliver work in line with team commitments and agreed timelines.
  • Implement backlog items in accordance with agreed acceptance criteria, coding standards and development best practices.
  • Complete clear and concise documentation required both internally and externally

SQL Development & Solution Delivery
  • Design, develop and maintain SQL-based application components, including stored procedures, functions, views, triggers and other database objects.
  • Develop and maintain business logic within SQL Server, ensuring solutions are scalable, maintainable and aligned with business requirements.
  • Troubleshoot, debug and resolve defects and production issues.
  • Optimise SQL code for performance to ensure reliability, maintainability and scalability.

Quality & Continuous Improvement
  • Perform peer reviews and participate in team code review activities.
  • Develop and execute unit tests to validate solutions before release.
  • Write and verify code that meets acceptance criteria and quality standards.
  • Produce and maintain clear and concise technical documentation for internal and external stakeholders.

Stakeholder & Customer Collaboration
  • Collaborate with Product Owners, Technical Leads, Delivery Leads and other stakeholders to understand requirements and clarify expected outcomes.
  • Engage directly with customers where required to clarify requirements, demonstrate solutions and support User Acceptance Testing.
  • In situations where direct customer interaction is not required, proactively engage with the Technical Lead, Delivery Lead and wider team to ensure alignment on requirements and desired outcomes.

Teamwork & Collaboration
  • Take shared responsibility for team commitments, delivery outcomes, and product quality, contributing to a culture of accountability and continuous learning.
  • Collaborate closely with team members - sharing knowledge, offering support when workloads or delivery pressures require it, and asking for help when needed.

Required Experience:
  • 3+ years developing and supporting software applications
  • Strong SQL database development experience, preferably Microsoft SQL Server (T-SQL)
  • Understanding of technical practices (TDD, BDD, Pair Programming, CI/CD, estimation techniques, etc)
  • Experience with relational data modelling and schema design, including normalisation trade-offs and constraint design
  • Experience tuning SQL query performance, including reading execution plans and designing effective indexing strategies
  • Experience mentoring other developers and reviewing SQL/schema design decisions
  • Experience with web technologies and APIs
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and reverse-engineer existing code to assess upstream/downstream impacts, particularly within large, long-standing production systems
  • Experience in full lifecycle software development (not purely ETL, reporting, or database administration)

Desirable Experience:
  • High level understanding of utility industry concepts
  • Experience with utility billing software
  • C#/.NET development, as the platform is expanding in this direction
  • Power BI experience
