What is a talent sourcer?

A talent sourcer works on the talent acquisition team and is responsible for identifying and managing a list of potential candidates that could be hired by a given organization. No matter the career field, when companies need to hire employees, the first challenge is finding the right candidates to interview. As a talent sourcer, it’s your job to create a sourcing strategy that outlines the process of finding, hiring, and retaining talented employees. Other duties include reaching out to candidates through phone, email, and social media, and generating interest in career opportunities. As a talent sourcer, you engage with workers to ensure that their skills meet the ideal qualifications for the job, so that a recruiter can proceed with interviewing and onboarding.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a talent sourcer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Talent Sourcer, you need a solid understanding of recruitment processes, Boolean search techniques, and candidate assessment, often supported by a degree in HR or a related field. Familiarity with applicant tracking systems (ATS), sourcing tools like LinkedIn Recruiter, and CRM platforms is typically required. Exceptional communication, resilience, and relationship-building skills help Talent Sourcers engage both passive and active candidates effectively. These skills are vital for efficiently identifying and attracting top talent, which directly impacts the organization’s hiring success.

How does a talent sourcer typically collaborate with recruiters and hiring managers during the recruitment process?

Talent Sourcers work closely with recruiters and hiring managers to understand the specific requirements of open positions and develop targeted sourcing strategies. They are responsible for proactively identifying and engaging potential candidates, often providing a shortlist of qualified leads for recruiters to contact. Regular communication and feedback are essential, as Sourcers refine their search criteria based on hiring manager input and market trends, ensuring the recruitment pipeline remains strong and aligned with business needs.

Job description

Talent Sourcer

Position: Talent Sourcer
Location: Buffalo, New York
Schedule: Monday–Friday, approximately 8:00 AM–5:00 PM
Contract Length: 6 months
Pay Range: $42–$50/hour
Work Arrangement: Hybrid

Position Overview

The Talent Sourcer will support high-volume recruiting efforts by identifying, engaging, and building pipelines of qualified talent across manufacturing, skilled trades, technical, and operations positions.

This position is heavily focused on proactive sourcing rather than traditional full-cycle recruiting. Approximately 90% of the role is sourcing, with the remaining time focused on candidate coordination and recruiting support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Proactively source candidates using Boolean searches, LinkedIn, job boards, resume databases, Google X-Ray searches, and other sourcing strategies.
  • Develop creative sourcing strategies for high-volume and difficult-to-fill positions.
  • Build and maintain strong candidate pipelines for current and future hiring needs.
  • Manage a high-volume requisition workload, potentially supporting 20–40+ active requisitions at a time.
  • Identify and engage both active and passive candidates.
  • Conduct initial candidate outreach and qualification.
  • Partner closely with recruiters and hiring teams to understand position requirements and sourcing priorities.
  • Track candidate activity and maintain accurate recruiting documentation.
  • Adjust sourcing strategies based on hiring demand, candidate availability, and market conditions.
  • Support positions including Production Associates, Material Handlers, Machine Operators, Maintenance Technicians, HVAC Technicians, Mechanics, Robotics/Technical positions, and other manufacturing and skilled-trades roles.

Qualifications

  • Strong professional experience in talent sourcing or recruiting, preferably within manufacturing, construction, skilled trades, engineering, technical, or high-volume environments.
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple requisitions simultaneously.
  • Strong understanding of advanced sourcing techniques.
  • Hands-on experience creating and modifying Boolean search strings using AND, OR, NOT, quotation marks, and parentheses.
  • Experience utilizing Google X-Ray sourcing and multiple candidate databases.
  • Ability to provide specific examples of successful sourcing strategies and difficult-to-fill positions.
  • Strong candidate outreach and engagement skills.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, metrics-driven recruiting environment.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.

Ideal Candidate

The strongest candidate will be a true sourcer who spends the majority of their time identifying and engaging talent rather than primarily handling HR administration or generalist responsibilities.

They should be able to clearly explain:

  • How they build Boolean searches from scratch.
  • Which sourcing platforms and databases they have used.
  • How many requisitions they have supported simultaneously.
  • Their typical sourcing and hiring volume.
  • Examples of difficult positions they successfully sourced.
  • How they change their sourcing strategy when the initial search does not produce qualified candidates.

Contract & Conversion

This is initially a 6-month contract, with the potential for conversion to a permanent position based on performance and business needs.
