What is a tactical buyer?

A Tactical Buyer is responsible for purchasing goods and services to meet a company's short-term operational needs. They focus on sourcing suppliers, negotiating prices, and ensuring timely deliveries while maintaining cost efficiency and quality standards. Unlike strategic buyers who focus on long-term procurement planning, tactical buyers handle day-to-day purchasing activities and urgent supply chain requirements. Their role is crucial in maintaining smooth operations by preventing delays and cost overruns.

What are some typical challenges faced by tactical buyers, and how can they be addressed?

Tactical Buyers often face challenges such as managing tight deadlines, balancing competing priorities, and responding to sudden changes in supplier availability or market prices. Successfully navigating these challenges requires strong organizational skills, the ability to multitask, and proactive communication with suppliers and internal stakeholders. Building a solid understanding of your company's procurement processes, staying updated on industry trends, and leveraging technology for automation and data analysis can also help. Those who adapt quickly and maintain a collaborative approach tend to excel in this dynamic procurement environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the tactical buyer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tactical Buyer, you need strong skills in procurement, negotiation, inventory management, and a relevant degree such as supply chain, business, or a related field. Familiarity with ERP systems like SAP or Oracle, supply chain analytics tools, and certification such as CIPS or CPSM is highly valuable. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and time management skills help you build effective supplier relationships and navigate fast-paced buying cycles. These capabilities ensure timely, cost-effective purchasing decisions and contribute to the efficient operation of the organization’s supply chain.

Job description

What are you going to do
The Tactical Buyer is responsible for managing the day-to-day procurement activities that support Voortman USA's operations and customers throughout North America. This role oversees the sourcing, purchasing, and availability of parts, tooling, consumables, and machine components by building and maintaining strong relationships with domestic and international suppliers. The Tactical Buyer creates and manages purchase orders, negotiates pricing and delivery terms, monitors supplier performance, resolves supply issues, and identifies alternative sourcing opportunities to reduce risk and improve overall supply chain efficiency.
In addition, the Tactical Buyer plays a critical role in inventory and material planning by monitoring stock levels, analyzing demand trends, lead times, and consumption patterns, and ensuring appropriate inventory levels are maintained to support business objectives. The Tactical Buyer collaborates closely with Parts, Service, Engineering, Delivery, Warehouse, and Global Procurement teams to prioritize critical shortages, support customer requirements, optimize transportation costs, and maintain high service levels while balancing inventory investment and procurement costs.
The role also includes maintaining accurate supplier, pricing, and material master data within SAP and other business systems, resolving invoice and payment discrepancies with Accounts Payable, and participating in continuous improvement initiatives related to procurement and inventory management. The Tactical Buyer tracks and reports key performance indicators such as supplier on-time delivery, inventory turnover, backorders, cost savings, and expedited freight spending, while providing recommendations to management on purchasing strategies, supplier performance, and inventory investments. Additionally, this position supports budgeting and forecasting activities, attends supplier meetings and industry events to stay informed of market trends, and performs other duties as assigned to contribute to the overall success of the supply chain organization.
