Senior Engineering Manager - Civil Space Systems Discipline Chief (Onsite)

Seeking a Systems Engineering Manager responsible for the leadership, training, coaching as well as the oversight of systems engineers assigned to various platforms that may include Artemis Orion or Space Launch System, ESOC (Space Suit), Space Station or Thermal Systems. In this role you will support engineers’ use of processes and tools which convert customer expectations, requirements, and specifications into functional/physical architecture(s) leading to engineering design specifications facilitating the work of the other design disciplines.  Typical design/development projects will include unique mechanical assemblies, electrical assemblies, and integrated electromechanical devices commonly found in commercial and military Aerospace applications.

In this role, the candidate will function as the Civil Space Systems Discipline Chief Engineer providing deep technical stewardship within the discipline. This role defines standards and methods, ensures consistent application of best practices, and maintains technical integrity across programs, while developing talent and providing independent technical oversight.

Additionally, the successful candidate may be required to be an individual contributor to a hardware development program on a part time basis.

Applicants will have strong knowledge of and experience with Aerospace/Defense related systems engineering processes including the generation of Systems Engineering Management Plans, structured requirements analysis & decomposition, initial system sizing/modelling, and the generation, planning, management, and verification of requirements compliances through the typical means of analysis, inspection, demonstration and test.

The applicant will have proven supervisory skills including the promotion of ethical behavior in accordance with RTX’s “Code of Ethics.”  Further, it is expected that candidates have a history of being self-motivated and possessing the ability to set individual as well as team priorities and to accomplish established goals within a matrixed team environment.

Tasks & assignments include:

  • Acquire and develop Systems Engineering talent through recruiting, hiring, and management processes Ensure compliance with systems design processes, along with providing guidance/direction for the improvement of those processes during hardware development projects/programs
  • Provide occasional expert systems modelling and general design guidance and support to development and production programs
  • Provide systems design support for internal and customer funded R&D projects from concept to test
  • Participates in the proposal process to develop and review cost estimates, schedules and proposals packages where engineering resources are required

Systems Discipline Chief Engineer activities include:

  • Coordinate and interface Mission Critical Products and Missions Systems System Discipline Chief Engineers on Systems Engineering Initiatives
  • Own discipline standards, methods, tools Ensure technical excellence and design integrity
  • Promote standardization and reuse
  • Support programs as trusted technical advisors Establish and participate in discipline design reviews, peer reviews, and technical board

Hardware development qualifications include:

  • Proposal/development/manufacture/verification/operational support
  • Experience performing system development/integration/architecting E
  • Experience performing thermal/fluid/chemical analyses Relevant component hardware experience: heat exchangers,pumps/fans/separators/motors/motor controllers, chemical beds, sensors, valves, accumulators Relevant system experience: thermal control systems, air revitalization systems (CO2/H2O/trace contaminant removal), pressure control systems, oxygen generation systems, potable water systems, fuel cell systems, human waste management systems or other equivalent systems
  • Requirements management and verification/validation skills Ability to work well both independently and within an integrated product development (IPD) team environment
  • Excellent attention to detail Excellent writing & math skills

Level of Responsibility:

  • Supervisory responsibility for 10-15 systems individual contributors Prepare, monitor, and be responsible for proper program staffing, process performance metrics and business/operational results
  • Lead small project teams or multiple project teams in the improvement of systems engineering processes
  • Lead and or support failure/mishap investigations to positive conclusion using CORE tools and process enhancement Represent Civil Space as Systems Discipline Chief Engineer

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 10 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 7 years of experience
  • This position is considered safety sensitive in accordance with NASA Guidelines. Candidate will be subject to drug and alcohol testing per NASA’s regulation SUBPART 1835.5 Drug- Free Workforce

The salary range for this role is 132,400 USD - 251,600 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels.
