Job Summary

Since its inception in 1985, National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR) at Wichita State University has made a name for itself as the most capable university-based aviation research center in the United States, providing research, design, testing, certification and training to the aviation manufacturing industry, government agencies, educational entities and other clients that can benefit from our services.

NIAR is looking for a talented Senior Systems Design Engineer- Mechanical / EWIS / Interior to join our growing, innovative team. System design activity includes flight test, instrumentation, mechanical systems, electrical systems, interiors, and special mission systems. This position will be an independent contractor consulting as a Senior Systems Design Engineer- Mechanical / EWIS / Interior with NIAR to support various diverse customer programs.

Essential Functions
  • Responsible for developing detail and modification design concepts through final design. Designs will meet contractual/producibility requirements for end item deliverables including system modifications, mechanical routing/installation, electrical routing/installation, and interior configuration/installation for development and production purposes. Tasks will include detail modeling, system configuration layouts and detail designs.
  • Creation and changes to CAD models, drawings, and other documents in support of the product, participating in trade studies, creating and maintaining ICDs (interface control documents), creating and maintaining SCD’s (source control drawings), and coordinating with customers and suppliers.
  • Technical excellence and adherence to schedule of assignment area.
Qualifications/Minimum Requirements
  • Ability to work on‑site 80% of the time
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, or computer engineering with 10 years’ experience
  • This position requires access to EAR or ITAR controlled technologies. Applicants are required to be eligible for employment under U.S. export control laws and must meet the requirement of being a “U.S. Citizen”
  • High proficiency with 3D CAD tools (3DExperience, CATIA V5, Siemens NX, Solidworks)
  • High proficiency with aircraft system design and installation using the appropriate CAD workbenches
  • High proficiency with NASA and/or FAA system design requirements
  • Experience with systems design principles and implementation of system schematic requirements
  • Experience developing and modifying 3D models & drawings as well as MBD designs
  • Proficient designing / installing new and modification aircraft engineering at least one of the following: (1) Electrical system wiring, connectors, electrical components or avionics boxes; (2) Mechanical systems such as hydraulics, ECS, fuel, flight controls, water/waste, oxygen, doors, landing gear; (3) Interiors and associated sub-systems
  • Strong understanding of design fundamentals and ASME standards (Y14.5, Y14.31, Y14.37, Y14.41)
  • High proficiency for application of industry system specifications such as ARP4754, AS50881, ARP4754, ARP4761, ARP4752, ARP1897, ARP994, ARP5770 AS5440, MIL-STD-810, DO-254, RTCA/DO-160, AS5440, Mil-P-5518, ARP1532, and ARP 8615 standards
  • Proficiency in GD&T tolerance application
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (word, excel, PowerPoint).
  • Professional and diplomatic demeanor
  • Strong sense of accountability and integrity
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Domestic travel up to 10 % may be required
  • Experience in technical leadership and mentoring of interns and junior engineers
  • Self‑motivated and driven to produce high quality designs on schedule

  • Experience leading small teams and/or as technical specialist.
  • Experience creating new system installation layouts and concept designs
  • Aircraft support/MRB experience
  • Experience with customer-facing and FAA designate integration roles.
  • Experience with system safety analysis, system description documents and system schematic creation
  • Familiarity with DO-160 testing and environmental requirements and applications

All services will be provided as an independent contractor, pursuant to a Professional Services Agreement, which must be executed prior to being assigned any work.
