What is a systems engineer?

Systems engineers are professionals who design, integrate, and manage complex systems throughout their life cycles. They work across various industries, ensuring that all aspects of a project or system—hardware, software, processes, and people—work together efficiently and effectively. Systems engineers coordinate between different engineering teams, address technical and organizational challenges, and ensure requirements are met. Their role often involves both big-picture thinking and attention to detail to deliver reliable and scalable solutions.

What does a systems engineer do?

The role of a systems engineer varies based on the company they work for, but in every industry systems engineers use computerized systems to keep track of all the moving parts within their organizations. The term systems engineer usually refers to a computer systems engineer, which combines several disciplines to create, purchase, and install a computer system that suits the needs of each particular client. They will also work in a hands-on manner during the installation, acquisition, testing, and implementation phases of the project. Duties typically include making recommendations for scalability, troubleshooting any problems that arise during the use of the system, reviewing a company’s security requirements, and recommending security measures to allow the company to avoid compromising any sensitive data.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a systems engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Systems Engineer, you need a strong background in systems architecture, troubleshooting, and integration, typically supported by a degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with operating systems (like Linux and Windows), virtualization platforms, scripting languages, and certifications such as CompTIA, Cisco (CCNA), or Microsoft (MCSA) are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and teamwork make candidates stand out in this role. These skills and qualifications ensure the design, implementation, and maintenance of reliable, scalable systems critical for organizational operations.

How does a systems engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project lifecycle?

Systems Engineers often serve as a bridge between various technical and non-technical teams, including software developers, network specialists, project managers, and end users. Throughout a project, they participate in requirements gathering, design reviews, and integration testing, ensuring that each component fits seamlessly within the overall system. Effective communication and documentation are crucial, as Systems Engineers must translate complex technical concepts into actionable tasks for diverse stakeholders. This collaborative approach not only streamlines problem-solving but also helps deliver robust, scalable solutions.

What is the difference between Systems Engineer vs Network Engineer?

AspectSystems EngineerNetwork Engineer
CertificationsCompTIA Network+, Cisco CCNA, Microsoft certificationsCompTIA Network+, Cisco CCNA, Juniper JNCIA
Work EnvironmentDesigning, implementing, and managing IT systems and infrastructureDesigning, configuring, and maintaining network hardware and connectivity
Industry UsageIT, technology, enterprise solutionsTelecommunications, IT, networking service providers
Common TasksSystem integration, troubleshooting, server managementNetwork setup, routing, switching, security

While both roles involve technical expertise in IT infrastructure, Systems Engineers focus on overall system architecture and integration, whereas Network Engineers specialize in network hardware, connectivity, and security. Understanding these differences helps employers and professionals align skills with job requirements.

Is a systems engineer a high paying job?

Systems engineers typically earn above-average salaries compared to many other technical roles, with compensation varying based on experience, certifications, and location. They often work in industries such as technology, aerospace, and defense, where specialized skills and knowledge of tools like network systems and software are valued. Advanced certifications and experience can lead to higher pay levels in this field.

Is a systems engineer a stressful job?

Systems engineers often face stressful situations due to tight deadlines, complex problem-solving, and the need for high reliability in systems. The role can involve long hours and on-call responsibilities, especially during system outages or critical updates, but it also offers opportunities for problem-solving and technical growth.

Job description

Job Title: Systems Engineer

Job Description

This Systems Engineer role offers the opportunity to work on cutting-edge aerospace programs and support the full lifecycle of system development, from proposal through design, implementation, test, and deployment. You will define and model complex systems, manage architecture and requirements, and collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including engineering, system architects, and leadership. The position focuses heavily on Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), requirements development and decomposition, and SysML modeling for software-intensive systems.

Responsibilities

  • Manage program architecture and system requirements across all phases, including proposal, design, implementation, test, and deployment.
  • Perform system definition and modeling, including requirements, structure, behavior, and traceability.
  • Document and decompose system, subsystem, and component requirements into clear, actionable specifications.
  • Allocate requirements to system elements and functions, ensuring alignment with overall system architecture.
  • Analyze requirements traceability and verification to confirm that all requirements are properly linked and testable.
  • Identify and reconcile requirements conflicts, ambiguities, or gaps by working closely with stakeholders and technical teams.
  • Prepare system design documents, reports, and presentations that clearly communicate technical concepts and design decisions.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams, system architects, and leadership to ensure system requirements are implemented correctly.
  • Review designs, technical documents, and implementation artifacts to confirm that requirements are satisfied.
  • Estimate material and labor costs to support planning, proposals, and project execution.
  • Develop and maintain SysML models to support software development and system understanding.
  • Work with software teams to support verification and validation activities by providing accurate requirements and models.
  • Contribute to the improvement of Systems Engineering processes and procedures to enhance efficiency and quality.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and stakeholders, fostering strong collaboration and alignment.
  • Provide technical leadership on projects as needed, including managing schedules and coordinating engineering activities.

Essential Skills

  • Strong understanding of Systems Engineering principles and requirements management.
  • Experience in Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), preferably 3–5+ years, with 5–7 years as the target.
  • Hands-on experience with SysML modeling for software-intensive systems.
  • Proficiency with requirements management tools such as JAMA and DOORS.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform requirements gathering, writing, and decomposition for complex systems.
  • Ability to create, maintain, and interpret system models to support design and development activities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools for documentation, analysis, and presentations.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills to work closely with engineering, system architects, and leadership.
  • Ability to estimate material and labor costs and support proposal development.
  • Eligibility to obtain a U.S. government security clearance, including the ability to obtain a DoD Top Secret clearance.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent related experience.
  • Experience working with JAMA requirements management software.
  • Familiarity with Model-Based Systems Engineering practices and tools such as Cameo Systems Modeler (or similar SysML tools).
  • Proficiency in SysML modeling tools and model-based workflows.
  • Current Secret or Top Secret security clearance is preferred.
  • Experience with Agile project environments and the ability to support project leadership responsibilities.
  • Experience in software development or strong understanding of software modeling concepts.
  • Experience contributing to or leading efforts to transition traditional engineering practices toward model-based approaches.
  • Exposure to verification and validation activities in collaboration with software teams.
  • MBSE, SysML, and Jama-related training or certifications are beneficial.

Work Environment

The role operates within an aerospace development environment that is currently in the middle of the implementation phase, focusing on active development rather than simulation. The team supports multiple programs with two primary needs: detailed requirements development and SysML modeling for software, and project leadership responsibilities that include technical leadership and schedule management. Modeling is a growing emphasis, and the organization is actively transitioning engineering practices toward model-based approaches, providing opportunities to influence and shape these processes. You will work closely with software and systems engineering teams in a collaborative, project-driven setting that uses modern MBSE tools and Agile practices. The position emphasizes technical rigor, clear documentation, and cross-functional communication in a professional engineering environment.
