System Safety Engineer Internship information

What is a system safety engineer internship?

A System Safety Engineer Internship is a temporary position, usually for students or recent graduates, that provides hands-on experience in identifying, analyzing, and mitigating risks associated with engineering systems. Interns work under the supervision of experienced safety engineers to ensure that products, processes, or systems comply with safety regulations and standards. They may participate in safety assessments, hazard analyses, and the development of safety documentation. The goal is to help interns build practical skills and understanding of safety engineering principles in real-world projects.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during a system safety engineer internship?

As a System Safety Engineer Intern, you can expect to work on projects that involve analyzing potential risks in engineering systems, supporting hazard assessments, and assisting with the development of safety documentation. Typical tasks may include conducting safety analyses, reviewing technical designs for compliance with safety standards, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams such as design, reliability, and quality assurance engineers. Interns often have the opportunity to attend safety review meetings, contribute to risk mitigation strategies, and gain hands-on experience with industry-standard safety tools and methodologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a system safety engineer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a System Safety Engineer Intern, you need a foundational understanding of engineering principles, risk analysis, and safety standards, typically gained through coursework in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with safety analysis tools (like FMEA or fault tree analysis), and software such as MATLAB or safety management systems, is often expected. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help interns collaborate and contribute to team safety assessments. These competencies are vital for ensuring that engineering projects comply with safety regulations and minimize risks throughout the design and implementation phases.

What is the difference between System Safety Engineer Internship vs System Safety Engineer?

AspectSystem Safety Engineer InternshipSystem Safety Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduate with relevant courseworkBachelor's or higher in engineering, certifications like CSEP often preferred
Work EnvironmentInternship programs, entry-level projects, supervised tasksFull-time professional role, responsible for safety analysis and risk management
Employer & Industry UsageInternship positions in aerospace, defense, automotive industriesFull-time roles in similar industries, with increased responsibilities
Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding entry-level opportunities and differencesClarifying professional role and career progression

The System Safety Engineer Internship provides hands-on experience for students or recent graduates, focusing on learning safety processes under supervision. In contrast, the System Safety Engineer role involves full responsibility for safety analysis, risk assessments, and safety program management. The internship is a stepping stone toward a full engineering career, while the engineer position requires more experience and credentials.

  • Proven experience interfacing with computer-based database and schedule tools

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with DoD and Air Force system safety documents such as AFI 91-202, MIL-STD-882E, and AFSPCMAN 91-710

  • Working knowledge of range safety requirements for Space Launch Delta 45 and 30, including Space Vehicle System Safety design and the SSC/AATS Safety Review process

  • Experience with Environmental Compliance/NEPA, Orbital Debris Mitigation Standard Practices, and Nuclear or radiation safety

  • Demonstrated proficiency in utilizing JIRA and Confluence for project management and documentation
