Location: Newport, DE

Shift: 2 weeks nights; 2 weeks days and every other weekend

Overview

The Synthesis Operator safely executes multi‑step chemical production processes to meet business needs. This role operates DCS/PLC‑controlled reactions, performs in‑process quality testing, troubleshoots equipment and process issues, maintains accurate documentation, and supports training of new operators while adhering to all safety, environmental, and quality requirements.

 

Essential Job Functions

Process Operations & Production

  • Operate and monitor multi‑step organic synthesis reactions and distillation processes using DCS/PLC systems.
  • Adjust process parameters to maintain safe, efficient, and high‑quality production.
  • Execute daily production activities using SOPs and shift notes; complete batch cards and shift documentation.
  • Maintain housekeeping standards and operate material‑handling equipment (hoists, forklifts).

Safety & Chemical Handling

  • Handle hazardous, flammable, and toxic chemicals in compliance with OSHA PSM.
  • Perform LOTO, safe‑work permitting, and emergency response procedures as required.
  • Follow all EHS, Responsible Care®, and ISO 9001:2015 requirements.

Quality Control & Analytical Testing

  • Conduct in‑process QC testing (GC, titration, pH, conductivity, wet chemistry).
  • Interpret analytical data and make real‑time process adjustments to meet product specifications.

Troubleshooting & Equipment Support

  • Diagnose issues with analytical instruments, process equipment, and control systems.
  • Assist with equipment inspections, calibration checks, and communication of maintenance needs.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Maintain accurate batch records, logbooks, and electronic entries in compliance with PSM, ISO, and internal quality systems.
  • Use MES and Microsoft Office for reporting and communication across shifts.
  • Training & Continuous Improvement
  • Serve as a subject matter expert and provide on‑the‑job training to new operators.
  • Participate in RCA, HAZOP, and continuous improvement initiatives using Lean/Six Sigma tools.
  • Communicate safety or quality concerns promptly.

Required Education and Experience

Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 4 years of production operations experience.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and meet physical requirements (standing, climbing, kneeling, ladder use, full vision range).
  • Understanding of 5S, visual management, KPIs, and standard work.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to learn Microsoft Office, DCS, and PLC systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in batch chemical operations.
  • Experience in a PSM‑regulated environment.
  • Lean/Six Sigma training or certification.
