System Implementation Manager information

What does a system implementation manager do?

A System Implementation Manager oversees the planning, execution, and delivery of new software or technology systems within an organization. They coordinate between technical teams, stakeholders, and vendors to ensure the system meets business requirements and is implemented on time and within budget. Their responsibilities include managing project timelines, training staff, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring a smooth transition from old to new systems. Effective communication and strong project management skills are essential for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a system implementation manager?

To thrive as a System Implementation Manager, you need strong project management skills, technical expertise in IT systems, and typically a relevant bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with ERP software, CRM platforms, project management tools like Jira or MS Project, and certifications such as PMP or ITIL is often required. Outstanding communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities help drive cross-functional collaboration and manage stakeholder expectations. These skills and qualifications ensure successful system rollouts, minimize disruptions, and align technology solutions with organizational goals.

What are some common challenges faced by a system implementation manager during large-scale deployments?

System Implementation Managers often encounter challenges such as coordinating across multiple departments, managing project timelines, and ensuring clear communication among stakeholders. One significant hurdle is handling unexpected technical issues or integration problems that arise during deployment, which requires quick problem-solving and adaptability. Additionally, balancing user training needs and minimizing disruptions to daily operations are key aspects of the role. Successful managers proactively address these challenges by fostering collaboration, maintaining detailed project plans, and continuously engaging with both technical teams and end-users.

Job description

Title: Senior Project Manager
FERC & Change Management Accounting Compliance
Duration: 5 Months
Location: Portland, OR - Remote
Description
Performing work on two high profile accounting projects underway:
MONET Software Replacement - project management (manager: Erin Schwartz): this is a software project to replace an existing power cost forecasting model ("MONET"). This work would be for project management activities for a "lift and shift" software initiative; driving coordination, deadlines, testing cycles and deployment of the new tool.
FERC Order 898 compliance - change management services (manager: Carl Brinker): this is a project to adopt an accounting rule change effective 1/1/2025. This large project is already in flight and has identified the need for change management resourcing to help drive adoption of end-users. Changes for end-users are centered around
1) understanding what is changing and why, 2) where/when/how to change existing accounting strings where applicable, and 3) others impacts, e.g. to their budgets. This role is not project managing the overall implementation, cutover and deployment, just the change management aspects of the project. Role will involve scoping impacted parties, assessing training/communication needs, and drafting & deploying those change awareness needs.
Team and Work Environment
core team of 5 financial modelers and two primary stakeholder groups each with ~5 key contributors
FERC 898: broad project team (approx. 50+); change management audience (impacted end users) of 300+.
What would "a day in the life" of this role look like?: Project management: lift-and-shift software implementation.
Change management: accounting compliance project
What interaction level with this role have the team members and hiring manager? Interaction with project teams (software project management) and broader business (change management)
What would you say is the top priority for the worker over the first few weeks/months?: MONET: get caught up on project, assemble a project timeline and plan.
FERC 898: scope impacted population, begin assessing training and communication needs.
What do you foresee being the biggest challenge in this role? The stakeholders for the MONET lift and shift will require a lot of research and analysis before making a "go" decision on selecting the replacement - more than what is typical.
The FERC 898 is a broad-reaching program and will involve several target audience with differing levels of involvement and acumen.
