Systems Administrator

Location: Baltimore, MD

Position Description

As a member of Technology Operations, the Systems Administrator at Moodlerooms responsibilities extend across the infrastructure and systems of a 24x7x365 production environment providing online classrooms in a SaaS model.  The Systems Administrator accomplishes this by applying a diverse set of technical skills and experiences across a multitude of application and infrastructure technologies, and by maintaining excellent relationships with technology and business stakeholders.

The primary focus for this position is the collaborative ownership of a cloud-based learning management platform operating within a LAMP stack.  Additional responsibilities will extend to maintaining metrics and processes associated with Service Management as outlined in the ITIL Version 3 framework.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Research, design, develop and implement solutions for fault tolerance, performance, capacity, and configuration management for various technical operations.  Will work in tightly focused teams to identify efficient, centralized solutions. Provide subject matter expertise and leadership with respect to a moderate to large-scale MySQL implementation. Identifies production stability concerns via break point and impact analysis.  Designs, develops and implements remediation plans to address. Designs, develops and implements documentation or tools to improve the capabilities of lower levels of Technical Support.  Mentors Technical Support team. Designs, develops, and implements documentation or tools appropriate for the maintenance of application platforms. Interface with development teams to resolve Tier 3 'in code' issues.   On-call support for escalated off-hours issues. Maintains a high degree of involvement with development and architecture teams regarding application needs or repercussions of infrastructure changes. Work with Development counterparts from within and outside the SDLC to improve code and architecture. Execution and maintenance of internal SLAs developed with business stakeholders..

Qualifications

 Required Skills and Abilities:

Linux operating systems dominance.  Should be familiar with HA configurations, security and patch management and general *nix administration.  Experience managing large server fleets highly desired. Near mastery of the following: Apache Web Server mySQL. PHP Automated deployment genius using Chef or Puppet. Strong scripting experience to produce solutions and perform troubleshooting-preferably in Ruby or Bash. Strong grasp of Internet network concepts, protocols and associated services (TCP/IP, HTTP, DNS). NAS administration a plus. Strong understanding of application development.  Ideal candidate will have programming experience, be capable of understanding and deconstructing program flow, and be conversant with developers on design and implementation options. 'Blow us away' analytical skills.  Candidate will frequently be required to analyze and predict performance capabilities of a given application system.  Requires a great degree of resourcefulness for uncovering disparate performance data points and correlating them. Follows IT industry trends and developments in open source.  Will keep an eye out for new ideas on process and product recommendations.   Strong communication (both verbal and written) and customer service skills.  Ability to exchange information with technical and non-technical individuals in a clear and concise manner. Ability to work harmoniously and effectively as part of a team. Cool under pressure. Education and/or Experience:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related discipline AND 5+ years in a technical role involving applications operation and management, preferably in a 24-7-365 production environment
