As of Jun 21, 2026, the average hourly pay for sysml in the United States is $31.95, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $25.24 and $34.86 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How does a SysML Modeler typically collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams during a project?

SysML Modelers work closely with systems engineers, hardware designers, software developers, and project managers to ensure the system's requirements and architecture are clearly communicated and understood. They facilitate model-based systems engineering (MBSE) by creating and maintaining SysML diagrams that serve as a common reference point for all stakeholders. Regular interactions include participating in design reviews, clarifying requirements, and updating models based on team feedback, which helps identify potential issues early in the development cycle. Effective collaboration skills and the ability to translate complex technical concepts into visual models are key to success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SysML Modeler, and why are they important?

To thrive as a SysML Modeler, you need strong systems engineering knowledge, experience with model-based systems engineering (MBSE) methodologies, and proficiency in SysML modeling, typically backed by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with SysML modeling tools like MagicDraw, Cameo Systems Modeler, or Enterprise Architect, and relevant certifications such as OMG Certified Systems Modeling Professional (OCSMP), are highly valued. Excellent analytical thinking, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help translate complex technical requirements into clear system models and facilitate team collaboration. These skills and qualifications are crucial for accurately modeling complex systems, ensuring clear stakeholder communication, and supporting efficient system development and integration.

What engineers make 300,000 a year?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as software engineering, petroleum engineering, or aerospace engineering can earn $300,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced skills, and working in high-demand industries or leadership roles. Compensation often includes bonuses, stock options, or other incentives.

How much do MBSE engineers make?

MBSE (Model-Based Systems Engineering) engineers typically earn between $80,000 and $130,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Senior or specialized MBSE engineers with certifications and proficiency in tools like SysML can earn higher salaries, especially in aerospace, defense, and automotive sectors.

Is SysML still used?

SysML (Systems Modeling Language) is still actively used in systems engineering for modeling complex systems, especially in industries like aerospace, defense, and automotive. Professionals often use SysML tools such as MagicDraw or Enterprise Architect and may hold certifications in model-based systems engineering (MBSE).

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as software engineering, petroleum engineering, or aerospace engineering can earn $500,000 or more annually, especially with experience, advanced skills, and leadership roles. High compensation often includes bonuses, stock options, or profit sharing, particularly in large corporations or high-demand industries.

What is SysML and what is it used for?

SysML, or Systems Modeling Language, is a general-purpose modeling language used to specify, analyze, design, and verify complex systems. It extends UML (Unified Modeling Language) to support systems engineering, enabling professionals to model hardware, software, data, processes, and personnel within a unified framework. SysML is widely used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and defense to facilitate clear communication and collaboration among multidisciplinary teams. Its diagrams help represent system requirements, structure, behavior, and parametrics, making it easier to manage complexity and ensure system integrity throughout the lifecycle.

Job description

Job Title: Specialist, Model-Based Systems Engineer (MBSE)

Job Code: 35073

Job Location: Melbourne, FL

Work Schedule: 9/80: Employees work 9 out of every 14 days - totaling 80 hours worked - and have every other Friday off

Job Description:

L3 Harris Technologies Mission Networks Division is seeking a Senior Specialist, Model-Based Systems Engineer (MBSE), to support a funded, multi-year Internal Research and Development (IRAD) effort. This role supports the application of Agile Systems Engineering and SAFe-based practices to advance innovative solutions for commercial FAA-related mission-critical infrastructure and services.  This candidate is Systems Engineer who leverages MBSE as an output of good Systems Engineering practices.

The selected candidate will lead the development, analysis, and maintenance of SysML-based system models, with emphasis on system architecture, interface definition, requirements traceability, and cross-disciplinary integration. This is an on-site position requiring hands-on proficiency with Cameo Systems Modeler and strong collaboration across software, security, test, and systems engineering teams.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform system analysis activities including scope definition, problem analysis, requirements elicitation, and requirements development.
  • Develop, maintain, and update SysML models to support system architecture, behavior, structure, interfaces, and integration.
  • Create architecture and data models using SysML and related modeling frameworks, as appropriate.
  • Produce model-derived outputs and reports, including artifacts such as CONOPS and other technical documentation.
  • Support software-centric system development through model-based systems engineering methods and tools.
  • Participate in Agile planning, reviews, and technical assessments across the system development lifecycle.
  • Facilitate technical exchange meetings with stakeholders and support alignment of model content with program objectives.
  • Collaborate across engineering disciplines and with internal and external stakeholders to ensure technical consistency, design quality, and mission alignment.
  • Work closely with software, security, and test teams to maintain alignment between requirements, architecture, design, and verification activities.
  • Contributes to the execution of the IRAD technical roadmap through disciplined model development and systems engineering rigor.
  • Works under minimal supervision and is expected to operate independently within established technical objectives and program priorities.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
  • Ability to obtain US Security Clearance.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree and minimum 4 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 2 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 8 years of prior related experience.

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • 5 years of direct experience in Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) using SysML and Cameo Systems Modeler.
  • 4 years of experience across multiple phases of the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC), including requirements analysis, design, development, integration, test, implementation, documentation, and evaluation.
  • Experience developing and applying all nine SysML diagram types in support of system analysis and design.
  • Experience using Cameo Systems Modeler tool suite, including Teamwork Cloud.
  • Proficiency in scripting or automating functions within Cameo Systems Modeler.
  • Experience generating model-based reports and technical outputs directly from MBSE environments.
  • Familiarity with Unified Architecture Framework (UAF) or related architecture modeling frameworks.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging FAA architecture and operating environments.
  • Experience supporting operational analysis, architectural decomposition, and requirements development at multiple levels of detail.
