Switch Operator information

What is a switch operator?

Switch Operators are professionals responsible for operating and controlling railroad track switches and signals to direct the movement of trains. They ensure trains are routed safely and efficiently through rail yards, onto different tracks, or along specified routes. Their duties may also include communicating with train crews, inspecting track switches for proper operation, and coordinating with dispatchers to prevent collisions or delays. Switch Operators play a critical role in maintaining the smooth and safe flow of rail traffic.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a switch operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Switch Operator, you need strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with signaling systems, communication radios, and control panels is typically required, along with safety certifications such as FRA regulations in rail settings. Excellent situational awareness, problem-solving, and teamwork skills help you respond quickly to changing conditions and coordinate with others. These abilities are crucial to ensure the safe, efficient movement of trains and prevent accidents in rail yards or on tracks.

What are some typical challenges a switch operator might face during daily operations?

Switch Operators often work in fast-paced environments where attention to detail is critical. One common challenge is coordinating with multiple train movements while ensuring safety protocols are strictly followed. Handling unexpected changes in schedules or equipment issues requires quick thinking and effective communication with dispatchers, engineers, and yard crews. Additionally, working outdoors in various weather conditions and during irregular hours can add to the complexity of the role.

  • Maintain awareness of data center infrastructure procedures that affect fabrication work.
  • Inspect completed work and correct quality issues before delivery or installation.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe fabrication and work areas.
  • Support Production activities and customer installation schedules as assigned.

  • You solve practical fabrication problems using sound judgment and initiative.
  • You work independently while asking for guidance when risks or requirements are unclear.
  • You communicate clearly with team members, vendors, and internal customers.
  • You follow established safety practices when welding, fabricating, and operating tools or equipment.
  • You stay organized while managing multiple assignments and changing priorities.
  • You maintain clean work areas and treat shared spaces with care.
  • You follow through on commitments and complete work on schedule.
  • You contribute to team success during time-sensitive customer installations.

What You'll Bring
Required Qualifications

  • Experience with MIG and TIG welding.
  • Experience using powered and non-powered hand tools.
  • Ability to take accurate dimensional measurements.
  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
  • Working knowledge of welding, fabrication, paint, and chemical safety practices.

  • Clear verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and make routine decisions with limited guidance.
  • Valid state-issued driver's license.

  • Ability to lift or move up to 50 pounds frequently and more than 100 pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodation and using appropriate procedures or equipment.
  • Ability to wear approved Personal Protective Equipment in designated work areas.
  • This position may require additional background checks and drug screenings before or during employment in support of customer-specific deployments.
