Job description

Position Summary:
The Water Rescue Technician is responsible for responding to emergencies involving victims in and around water environments. This position performs rescue operations, victim recovery, boat operations, emergency medical care, and hazard mitigation in compliance with OSHA, NFPA, Coast Guard, and local emergency response standards. Technicians must maintain proficiency in water rescue techniques, rescue equipment, and incident command procedures while operating safely in dynamic and hazardous environments.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Respond to water rescue emergencies involving rivers, lakes, industrial waterways, floodwaters, and marine environments.
  • Perform surface water rescue, victim retrieval, and emergency stabilization.
  • Operate rescue boats, personal watercraft, and associated rescue equipment.
  • Conduct search operations utilizing established rescue and recovery techniques.
  • Provide Basic Life Support (BLS) patient care within certification level.
  • Assist with technical rescue operations including rope rescue, confined space rescue, and flood response incidents as assigned.
  • Inspect, maintain, and document rescue equipment and watercraft readiness.
  • Participate in drills, training exercises, and competency evaluations.
  • Complete incident reports and required documentation.
  • Follow all departmental safety policies, standard operating guidelines, and incident command procedures.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Texas Boat Operator certification.
  • Water Rescue Technician certification meeting NFPA 1006 and NFPA 1670 standards or equivalent.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Ability to swim proficiently and pass a departmental swim and physical agility assessment.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), EMT, or Paramedic certification.
  • Swiftwater Rescue Technician certification.
  • Technical Rescue certifications (Rope, Confined Space, Trench).
  • Industrial Emergency Response Team (ERT) experience.


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work in extreme weather and water conditions.
  • Lift, carry, drag, and maneuver rescue equipment and victims.
  • Wear personal protective equipment, flotation devices, and dry suits for extended periods.
  • Perform physically demanding rescue activities under stressful conditions.
